Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The spokesperson for the Senate, Yemi Adaramodu, has explained why the Red Chamber cannot recommend the creation of any state at the moment.<\/p>\nAdaramodu told journalists in Ilawe Ekiti over the weekend that while the upper chamber has received about 61 proposals for state creation from the six geopolitical zones, it has no constitutional power to unilaterally approve such requests.<\/p>\n
He explained that state creation can only be considered during a constitutional review process, which involves input from Nigerians and other critical stakeholders on issues ranging from local government autonomy to the creation of new states and local councils.<\/p>\n
Adaramodu said all proposals submitted during interactions with constituents will be collated and reviewed by the constitutional review committee led by Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau.<\/p>\n
The committee, he noted, will assess and filter the requests before presenting a report to the Senate.<\/p>\n
\u201cState creation is a serious matter that requires auditing demographic, geographic, and historical data,\u201d Adaramodu said, adding that even within some requesting states, there is no unanimous support for the proposals.<\/p>\n
He stressed that no state has yet been recommended for creation and that final decisions will only be made after the public hearing when the National Assembly resumes.<\/p>\n
