Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of engaging in selective investigations aimed at intimidating opposition figures, describing the trend as a threat to democracy and a sign of creeping dictatorship.<\/p>\n

In a statement issued on Monday, August 11, 2025, and signed by the party\u2019s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, ADC alleged that the anti-graft agency has been re-opening long-closed cases and reviving decade-old allegations against members of opposition parties, while quietly dropping probes involving allies of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).<\/p>\n

\u201cThe EFCC was created to be a fearless defender of the Nigerian people\u2019s trust, applying the law evenly to all\u2014friend or foe, ruling party or opposition. Today, that vision appears to have been compromised. The Commission now operates like a department of the APC,\u201d Abdullahi said.<\/p>\n

He claimed that in recent days, several senior figures in the opposition coalition had received EFCC summons in what he described as \u201cpolitically motivated\u201d actions, with cases opened not from new evidence but as retaliation for political alignments.<\/p>\n

The ADC further pointed to instances where investigations into prominent APC members seemed to have \u201cvanished from public view\u201d following their defection to the ruling party, while opposition leaders continued to face relentless legal and media pressure.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is selective prosecution, and selective prosecution is the death of justice,\u201d the statement read, warning that public perception of the EFCC is increasingly that \u201cone\u2019s guilt or innocence depends on party membership, not evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Calling on Nigerians, civil society organisations, and the media to resist \u201cthe dangerous slide into dictatorship,\u201d the ADC stressed that the EFCC belongs to the Nigerian people and is funded by taxpayers, not the ruling party.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe EFCC does not belong to the APC. It belongs to the Nigerian people,\u201d Abdullahi emphasised.<\/p>\n
