{"id":174096,"date":"2025-08-13T22:49:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-13T21:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/efcc-probes-suspect-for-undeclared-currency-at-airport"},"modified":"2025-08-13T23:53:54","modified_gmt":"2025-08-13T22:53:54","slug":"efcc-probes-suspect-for-undeclared-currency-at-airport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/efcc-probes-suspect-for-undeclared-currency-at-airport","title":{"rendered":"EFCC Probes Suspect for Undeclared Currency at Airport"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has commenced investigation of one Duru Damian arrested by the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, over alleged failure to declare 49,000 dollars at Lagos Airport.<\/p>\n<p>EFCC Spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, said this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>He said that Damian was intercepted by operatives of the NCS during a routine check at the AML\/ CFT Currency Declaration Desk on Monday at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUpon his arrest, the suspect, who was scheduled to travel on Emirates Airline to Dubai, claimed he had only 10,000 dollars on him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, when a search was conducted on him, a sum of 49,000 dollars was discovered undeclared, totaling 59,000 dollars,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Area Comptroller in charge of the NCS at the Airport, Effiong Harrison, while handing over to the EFCC, decried failure of travellers to comply with the currency declaration law.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, sustained sensitization and announcements are being made at relevant airports on the need for travellers to declare their currencies or equivalents.<\/p>\n<p>On his part while receiving the suspect, the acting Zonal Director, Lagos Zonal Directorate 2, EFCC, Assistant Commander Ahmed Ghali, said the commission would continue to enforce the law.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Nigeria<\/span> Follow <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Africa-Press<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria.
