Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Nigerian journalists have been challenged to uphold the ethics and values of their profession, as democracy cannot thrive without a free, credible, and independent press.<\/p>\n

Former Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Dr. Mike Omeri, made the call on Sunday during a media thanksgiving service organized by ERCC Gloryland in Lafia.<\/p>\n

Omeri warned that the peace and unity of society remain under threat when journalism is compromised through \u201cbrown envelope\u201d practices or undue influence. He emphasized that media independence is a critical pillar for sustaining democracy and fostering national development.<\/p>\n

He further encouraged practitioners to deepen their understanding of democratic principles to uphold fairness, professionalism, and freedom of expression. Omeri also appealed to the political class to regard the media as \u201ca partner in progress,\u201d noting that the rise of junk journalism has contributed to the harassment and intimidation of journalists both in Nigeria and beyond.<\/p>\n

Also speaking at the event, Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Dr. Danladi Jatau, commended the press for its role in sustaining Nigeria\u2019s 25 years of uninterrupted democracy since the start of the Fourth Republic.<\/p>\n

The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Abdullahi Sule, Mr. Ibrahim Addra, and the State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Salihu Mohammed Alkali\u2014represented by Juliana Ofokwu\u2014praised the media\u2019s commitment to professionalism and pledged continued support for initiatives that promote good governance.<\/p>\n

In his sermon, Dr. Nawani Aboki, Chairman and Chief Executive of Breeze FM Lafia, urged the congregation to support journalists in delivering quality services to society. He stressed that collaboration between the media and the public is vital for effective performance, warning against unethical practices that weaken public trust.<\/p>\n

Similarly, Rev. John Godiya, Associate Reverend of the church, called for responsible journalism that fosters social cohesion rather than fueling division, stressing that a strong partnership between the media and the people remains key to national progress.<\/p>\n
