Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>On Monday night, a group in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which prides itself as Eminent Leaders and Concerned Stakeholders, led by the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, threatened to work against the party if their recent demands were not met.<\/p>\nThey warned that failure to comply with their resolutions and demands would render the party\u2019s forthcoming national convention slated for November this year invalid, as legitimate members would be disenfranchised.<\/p>\n
The group met in Abuja on Monday and issued a communique at the end of its closed-door meeting, attended by the National Secretary of the party, Sam Anyanwu, and other leaders.<\/p>\n
Those who attended the meeting included Wike, Samuel Anyanwu, PDP national secretary; ex-governor of Abia, Okezie Ikpeazu; minority leader of the House of Representatives, Kingsley Chinda; suspended Speaker of the Rivers House of Assembly, Martins Ameawhule; former governors Samuel Ortom (Benue), Ayo Fayose (Ekiti) and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), among others.<\/p>\n
The Wike\u2019s camp of the PDP insisted that the party should conduct fresh congresses in Ebonyi and Anambra states and to recognise the south-south congress held in Calabar, Cross River state.<\/p>\n
In addition, it demanded that the Ekiti state local government congresses of the PDP be conducted immediately in compliance with subsisting judicial orders.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe call on the National Working Committee to urgently conduct fresh, transparent, and inclusive congresses in Ebonyi and Anambra states, in line with judgments of the courts. That a fresh and legitimate South-East Zonal Congress should be conducted.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat the outcome of the valid and legitimate South-South Congress held in Calabar, Cross River State and recognised by the court be respected.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat the Ekiti State Local Government Areas Congress should be conducted immediately, in obedience to the subsisting court judgement,\u201d part of the group\u2019s communique read.<\/p>\n
Before now, Wike had declared that the crisis rocking the PDP was \u201ctemporarily over,\u201d following the exit of those he called \u201cbuccaneers and vampires\u201d.<\/p>\n
The minister, however, has insisted that the outcome of the recent South South Zonal Congress of the party, which produced Chief Dan Orbih as its National Vice Chairman, must be accepted in order to stave off another round of crisis.<\/p>\n
He said, \u201cI said I was going to remain in the PDP and that was why I said the right thing must be done. I will not leave this party which I have done everything for, for the buccaneers and vampires.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf I had left the party, the buccaneers and vampires would have remained in PDP to come and collect the ticket\u201d.<\/p>\n
Asked whether the crisis was over, the minister said, \u201cWell, it is over for now because there are still some things remaining which I have told them they must do. One is our South-South Zonal Congress, which we must uphold. There are no two ways about it.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe National Vice Chairman of the PDP South South is Chief Dan Orbih. If they don\u2019t agree, that is another round of crisis\u201d.<\/p>\n
DAILY POST reports that the PDP is now faced with the options of placating the FCT Minister at the risk of further alienating other stakeholders, or stand firm and risk open confrontation with one of its most vocal power brokers.<\/p>\n
Recall that despite accepting a ministerial appointment in the President Bola Tinubu\u2019s government, Wike has remained a jugular on the neck of the PDP and a powerful voice within the opposition party.<\/p>\n
Sources close to the PDP leadership informed DAILY POST that Wike wants assurances that his loyalists will retain influence in the party\u2019s structure, especially in the South-South zone.<\/p>\n
According to the source, the minister is also said to be pushing for the removal of certain NWC members he believes worked against his political interests since the fallout of the 2023 presidential primaries.<\/p>\n
These demands have unsettled the party, with some leaders warning that bowing to Wike could deepen existing divisions.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe party is bigger than any individual. While Wike remains an influential member, his latest demands may stall preparations for the convention if not carefully managed,\u201d a source said.<\/p>\n
Some observers believe that how the party manages Wike\u2019s demands in the coming weeks will be crucial to its ability to present a united front.<\/p>\n
Decision left for NWC to make \u2013 PDP chieftain<\/b><\/p>\n
In a chat , Fabian Onah, Enugu North Zonal Chairman of the PDP said the NWC of the party would respond appropriately to the threat by Wike\u2019s camp.<\/p>\n
Onah said the decision about the matter is left for the highest organ of the party to make.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t have much to say, there\u2019s a national working committee of the party. Whatever issue there is, they are in a position to sort it out.\u201d<\/p>\n
We won\u2019t bow to impunity \u2013 PDP govs<\/b><\/p>\n
On Tuesday, governors elected on the platform of the PDP responded to Wike\u2019s camp on the six conditions the party leadership must meet for the convention to hold peacefully.<\/p>\n
The governors maintained that they would enforce discipline within the party, declaring that the PDP will not yield to arrogance, impunity, or divisive tendencies.<\/p>\n
The Chairman of the PDP Governors\u2019 Forum and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, spoke on behalf of the PDP governors during the inauguration of the National Convention Planning Committee on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Mohammed noted that they are not cowards and are prepared to confront anyone who attempts to obstruct the party\u2019s progress.<\/p>\n
The Bauchi governor insisted that his counterparts in the PDP would not be distracted, stressing that the convention would proceed as planned.<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cWe are not cowards, and we are not afraid of anybody.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are capable of navigating this party beyond the shenanigans, beyond the arrogance, and beyond the impunity of others.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe cannot continue to take part and allow people to take us to the slaughterhouse. That\u2019s our job.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd our job is to make sure we don\u2019t go to the slaughterhouse.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd we are working as governors and working with the committee to ensure that. The keyword is discipline.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will no longer allow or tolerate anybody to take us for granted. It has to stop. Enough is enough. We are not going to tolerate it any longer.\u201d<\/p>\n
Wike no longer PDP member \u2013 Jacob Mark<\/b><\/p>\n
Meanwhile, former PDP National Legal Adviser, Jacob Mark has slammed Wike over his recent comments about the party.<\/p>\n
Mark, who spoke with Arise TV on Tuesday, declared that Wike is no longer a member of the opposition party.<\/p>\n
He claimed that Wike has not been attending meetings or participating in any activities of the PDP.<\/p>\n
He said, \u201cWe cannot verify which party he belongs to now. He is not a member of the PDP and has not attended any of its meetings. He is not involved in the party\u2019s decision-making process.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe has not put up any argument or concern about the party, so we are surprised when we see him in the media talking about the party, especially on things that are alien to the party.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t understand how someone will be playing politics just by imposing decisions on people.\u201d<\/p>\n
PDP should respond quickly to Wike\u2019s threat \u2013 Analyst<\/b><\/p>\n
Meanwhile, a Public Affairs Analyst and Communication Scholar at Peaceland University, Enugu, Nduka Odo, in an interview with DAILY POST, warned that the call by former Rivers State governor, Wike, for fresh congresses in some states poses a threat to the PDP\u2019s forthcoming national convention.<\/p>\n
Odo described the demand as \u201ca battle for the remnant soul of the PDP,\u201d noting that it reflects dissatisfaction by those whose interests were not accommodated in the outcome of recent state congresses.<\/p>\n
According to him, the development has unsettled members of the opposition party at the grassroots.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you observe the reactions and moods of PDP members at the ward and local government levels, you will notice they are no longer moving with certainty about the direction the party is headed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He added that instead of addressing the core issues facing the PDP, Wike had spent time speculating about the political platform on which Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, might contest in 2027.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy does Wike\u2019s camp want fresh congresses in Ebonyi and Anambra? That is the question that needs attention if you want to understand what is really going on.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat is the fate of a party if someone who has a foot in another party continues to call the shots?\u201d Odo queried.<\/p>\n
The scholar further warned that the PDP must quickly make its position clear ahead of the convention.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf the PDP wants to remain in existence and relevant, it must declare early whether it intends to stand independently or as an appendage of the ruling party.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe national convention may not hold if divergent demands keep emerging from supposed members,\u201d he cautioned.<\/p>\n
