The jump from last year is not the result of reckless borrowing, but largely the arithmetic of naira depreciation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the currency adjusts, the naira value of existing external debt rises\u2014whether or not new loans are taken.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNigeria\u2019s debt-to-GDP ratio remains a moderate 40\u201345%, well below South Africa\u2019s 70% or Ghana\u2019s 90% plus. The real challenge lies in revenue mobilization, not runaway borrowing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEncouragingly, revenues are improving, strengthening our capacity to service obligations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBorrowing is a legitimate tool for financing growth and reforms. What matters is sustainability, not soundbites.
