The Presidency has said that the Publisher of SaharaReporters, Omoyele Sowore, planned to cause trouble in the country and disappear like the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu.<\/p>\n
The Presidency said this in reaction to the insinuations in the media about the rearrest by the Department of State Services (DSS) of Sowore.<\/p>\n
A statement to DAILY POST on Sunday by Garba Shehu, President Muhammadu Buhari\u2019s Spokesman, the Presidency noted that, \u201cThe DSS does not necessarily need the permission of the Presidency in all cases to carry out its essential responsibilities that are laid down in the Nigerian Constitution \u2013 which was the foundation for the restoration of democracy in our country in 1999.<\/p>\n
\u201cHowever, it should not surprise anyone who has followed his actions and words that Sowore is a person of interest to the DSS.<\/p>\n
\u201cSowore called for a revolution to overthrow the democratically elected government of Nigeria.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe did so on television, and from a privileged position as the owner of a widely read digital newspaper run from the United States of America.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe founded an organisation, Revolution Now, to launch, in their own words, \u2018Days of Rage\u2019, with the publicised purpose of fomenting mass civil unrest and the elected administration\u2019s overthrow.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo government will allow anybody to openly call for destabilization in the country and do nothing.<\/p>\n
\u201cMr. Sowore is no ordinary citizen expressing his views freely on social media and the internet.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was a presidential candidate himself, who ran \u2013 and lost \u2013 as the flag bearer of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the February 23 general elections.<\/p>\n
\u201cNigeria\u2019s democracy was a long time in the making, and was achieved after decades of often harsh, military-led overthrows of government: the kind of situation Sowore was advocating.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo believe in and desire armed revolution is not normal amongst \u2018human rights activists\u2019, as Sowore has been incorrectly described.<\/p>\n
\u201cAgain, it is no surprise that he should be a person of interest to the DSS.<\/p>\n
\u201cNigeria is already dealing with an insurgency that has left millions of people displaced and desperate in the northeastern region of our country.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Boko Haram militants, who are behind the violence, also fancy themselves to be fighting for some sort of revolution.<\/p>\n
\u201cNigerians do not need another spate of lawlessness and loss of lives all in the name of \u2018revolution\u2019, especially not one that is orchestrated by a man who makes his home in far away New York \u2013 and who can easily disappear and leave behind whatever instability he intends to cause, to wit, Nnamdi Kanu.<\/p>\n
