The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers has unveiled plans to build a new secretariat.<\/p>\n
The new secretariat to be named NUPENG Tower will be built at a cost of N5.5bn, according to the union.<\/p>\n
At the foundation laying ceremony of the project in Lagos on Thursday, the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwolu, who was represented by the Commissioner for Planning and Urban Development, Dr Idris Salako, pledged to support the union in executing the project.<\/p>\n
He maintained that the welfare of workers was paramount and non-negotiable to the administration, adding, \u201cWe wish to reiterate our support in realising the workers\u2019 dream of building the NUPENG Tower.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Delta State Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, who was represented by the state Commissioner for Oil and Gas, Emma Amgbaduba, also pledged the support of the state government towards the project.<\/p>\n
He said, \u201cThe fact that you are coming up with this laudable project shows you are willing to move forward. Do not be discouraged. The project can be done.\u201d<\/p>\n
He advised the union to continue to cooperate with the government and host communities and ensure free flow of fuel.<\/p>\n
The Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Mallam Mele Kyari, described the tower, projected to occupy eight floors, as a massive project.<\/p>\n
Kyari ,who spoke through the Managing Director, Petroleum Products Marketing Company, Bala Wunti, expressed confidence that NUPENG would execute the project.<\/p>\n
He said, \u201cThere is no doubt whatsoever in my mind that with the uncommon commitment, dedication and determination NUPENG always deploys to all its struggles, this project will not be an exception.\u201d<\/p>\n
In his remarks, the National President, NUPENG, Williams Akporeha, recalled that the union had resolved to build the NUPENG Tower during its 40th anniversary celebration in 2018.<\/p>\n
