{"id":19003,"date":"2019-12-17T15:07:56","date_gmt":"2019-12-17T15:07:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/nigeria\/?p=19003"},"modified":"2019-12-17T15:07:56","modified_gmt":"2019-12-17T15:07:56","slug":"orji-kalu-begs-for-bail-complains-of-failing-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/all-news\/orji-kalu-begs-for-bail-complains-of-failing-health","title":{"rendered":"Orji Kalu begs for bail, complains of failing health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The former governor of Abia State, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, on Tuesday, asked a federal high court in Lagos to grant him bail on grounds of ill health.<\/p>\n<p>Orji Uzor Kalu had filed an application for bail pending the hearing of an appeal suit challenging his conviction.<\/p>\n<p>The former governor said he is battling serious health challenges that cannot be handled in the prison.<\/p>\n<p>But the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission which prosecuted Kalu on the corruption charges opposed the application.<\/p>\n<p>The anti-graft agency argued that bail is for accused persons on the presumption of being innocent, but since the former Governor has been convicted, he can no longer enjoy such privilege.<\/p>\n<p>The presiding judge, Mohammed Liman, adjourned till 23rd, December 2019 for ruling on the bail application.<\/p>\n<p>Kalu was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment over N7.16 billion fraud by a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on December 5<\/p>\n<p>DAILY POST reports that Justice Mohammed Idris convicted Kalu on 39 counts of N7.2 billion fraud and money laundering preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The former governor of Abia State, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, on Tuesday, asked a federal high court in Lagos to grant him bail on grounds of ill health.
