Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, has condemned the assault on one of its members, Dr Adeniyi A, while on duty at the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Owo, demanding immediate compensation for the pain and trauma he suffered.<\/p>\n

Adeniyi was reportedly brutally physically attacked and assaulted in the line of duty by a group of individuals alleged to be relatives of a surgical patient.<\/p>\n

NARD warned that this act of violence carried out while the doctor was discharging his duties, goes against every natural justice, describing it as reprehensible, barbaric, and a direct assault on the medical profession and the Nigerian healthcare system.<\/p>\n

In a statement signed by the union\u2019s executives and released by its Publicity Secretary Dr Abdulmajid Yahya Ibrahim, NARD, lamented that the attack was even more disturbing considering that it occurred within the hospital environment, a place meant to preserve life, safety, and human dignity.<\/p>\n

The union also regretted the recurring pattern of violence against healthcare workers across the country and the gross inadequacy of security measures in many health facilities.<\/p>\n

It said the increasing tendency for members of the public to resort to physical aggression against doctors and other health workers is dangerous, unlawful, and must be decisively addressed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can no longer tolerate a situation where resident doctors are exposed to harm while rendering essential services to Nigerians.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe vow that assault on resident doctors will no longer be treated with silence or indifference.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe demand full compensation for the pain, trauma, and suffering endured by our colleague as a result of this assault.<\/p>\n

\u201cComplete coverage of all medical expenses arising from the incident without delay.<\/p>\n

\u201cImmediate and comprehensive upscaling of security architecture around all entry points, clinical areas, and strategic posts within FMC Owo to prevent a recurrence.<\/p>\n

\u201cPrompt apprehension and diligent prosecution of all perpetrators involved in this criminal act, to serve as a deterrent to others.<\/p>\n

NARD warned that failure to meet the demands will compel the association to take all legitimate actions necessary to protect its members and defend the sanctity of medical practice in Nigeria.<\/p>\n
