Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Chairman of Buji Local Government Council, Hon. Najib Falau Gantsa, has said that deep-rooted systemic failures within public institutions were pushing some office holders into corrupt practices, stressing the need for urgent reforms to strengthen transparency and accountability in governance.<\/p>\n

Hon. Gantsa stated this while speaking at the 2 day Higher levels sensitisation workshop for public office holders of the 27 Local Government council organised by Jigawa State Public Complaints and Anti-corruption Commission (PCACC).<\/p>\n

Gantsa explained that excessive burdens, expectations from praise singers and political associates, as well as unofficial demands for service delivery often push officials into unethical practices.<\/p>\n

He noted that many of these obligations have no budgetary provisions, while the statutory salary of a local government chairman can not meet the numerous demands associated with the office.<\/p>\n

According to him, \u201cLocal Government authorities have administrative constraints. The process of executing our administrations have so many issues.<\/p>\n

Before a local government executes project for the development of its people, for a paper to get approval for executing a project, it will take you time, unless you settled some officers. And when they come for supervision, you must provide them with logistics and there is no any provision for that.\u201d<\/p>\n

He stressed the need for institutional reforms and stricter accountability measures to address the root causes of corruption in public service, also urging Public Complaints and Anti-corruption Commission to intensify efforts to sensitise the public on the danger of corruption.<\/p>\n

Speaking on behalf of the ICPC Chairman, the Kano\/Jigawa Office, Superintendent Sani Tukur warned that such practices undermine transparency, accountability, and due process in public service.<\/p>\n

He stressed the need for strict adherence to procurement laws and ethical standards to ensure fairness in the award of government contracts.<\/p>\n

He warned local government council chairmen against awarding contracts to family members and close associates.<\/p>\n

He emphasized that prudent financial management and compliance with anti-corruption regulations are essential for sustainable development.<\/p>\n
