Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>In its determination to ensure that the Special Seats Bill (HB1349) sees the light of the day, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Akwa Ibom State Chapter has begun to lobby National Assembly members from the state to vote in favour of the bill when it comes before the floor of the House.<\/p>\n

This is even as the National body of NAWOJ joins the Nigeria Women Solidarity March at the National Assembly, Abuja, today, Monday, February 16, 2026 in support of the bill.<\/p>\n

In a statement signed by the Akwa Ibom NAWOJ Chairman and the Secretary, Comrades Nsikak Okon and Mary Ekere on Monday, the chapter said the Special Seats Bill is a constitutional correction.<\/p>\n

According to the statement, \u201cThe Special Seats Bill offers a structured and lawful pathway to redress long-standing systemic exclusion. It is a strategic intervention aimed at strengthening democratic participation and ensuring that governance reflects the full spectrum of Nigerian society.<\/p>\n

\u201cTherefore, NAWOJ Akwa Ibom State Chapter calls on: all distinguished Senators and Honourable Members of the House of Representatives from Akwa Ibom State to vote in favour of the Special Seats Bill.<\/p>\n

\u201cPolitical leaders and stakeholders within the State to publicly support this constitutional amendment.<\/p>\n

\u201cCivil Society Organisations, Women Groups and Development Partners to amplify advocacy for inclusive representation.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet it be recorded that Akwa Ibom stood on the side of justice. Let it be recorded that our Lawmakers chose inclusion. Let it be recorded that Nigerian women refused to remain invisible.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe emphasise that inclusive governance is directly linked to sustainable development, social stability and responsive policymaking at the State level. When women are adequately represented, communities benefit from broader policy priorities and strengthened institutional accountability.\u201d<\/p>\n
