Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Federal High Court, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, has sentenced one Nkereuwem Felix Effiong, aged 30, to life imprisonment for his involvement in the kidnapping of Hon. Justice Joy Unwana, a High Court Judge.<\/p>\n

Justice Unwana was abducted on 18th December, 2023, alongside her driver, Idorenyin Ekanem, at about 8pm along Okobo\u2013Esuk Inwang\u2013Ndon Ebom Road in Akwa Ibom State.<\/p>\n

During the operation, the judge\u2019s police orderly, ThankGod Ekanem, was shot dead, while the Judge and her driver were held captive for five days.<\/p>\n

Effiong, a native of Ikot Ekwere in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area of the State, was convicted on three out of a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, membership of a terrorist group, and kidnapping under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.<\/p>\n

The matter was brought to the Court by the State Security Service, SSS, Uyo.<\/p>\n

Upon his arraignment, the defendant had no legal representation, prompting the court to assign the matter to the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria in line with the provisions of the law.<\/p>\n

Effiong pleaded guilty to all four counts of the charge.<\/p>\n

However, the court entered a plea of not guilty on his behalf in respect of count three, the kidnapping charge, owing to the grave nature of the offence and the severity of the punishment attached to it.<\/p>\n

Throughout the proceedings, the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria represented the defendant and ensured that all trial procedures were conducted in accordance with due process and the law.<\/p>\n

In the charge marked Federal Republic of Nigeria v. Nkereuwem Felix Effiong, the prosecution alleged that the defendant conspired between November 2023 and May 2024 at Esong Inwang Beach in Uruan Local Government Area with one Ubong Effiong, alias \u201cCondiment,\u201d Christopher Eyibio, Emem Friday, and others still at large, to commit acts of terrorism.<\/p>\n

The offence is contrary to and punishable under Section 26(1) of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.<\/p>\n

In count two, the court heard that Effiong knowingly belonged to a terrorist group known as the \u201cBling Bling Marine Strike Force,\u201d headed by Ubong Effiong, alias Condiment, contrary to Section 25(1) of the Act.<\/p>\n

Count three detailed the kidnapping of Justice Unwana and her driver and the killing of her Police orderly during the attack, an offence punishable under Section 24(2)(b) of the Act.<\/p>\n

Count four accused the defendant of concealing information about the activities and location of the kidnapping gang from security agencies, contrary to Section 16(1)(b) of the Act.<\/p>\n

In his confessional statement tendered in evidence, Effiong admitted joining the gang, also referred to as \u201cBling Bling Marine Strike Force,\u201d in November 2023 through a friend identified as Joseph, alias Akpa.<\/p>\n

He told investigators that the gang operated across Uyo, Uruan, Nsit Atai, Udung Uko, Okobo and Oron Local Government Areas, with a base at Esong Inwang Beach in Uruan.<\/p>\n

Effiong admitted participating in three kidnapping operations, including the abduction of Justice Unwana.<\/p>\n

He further disclosed that the gang received N25 million as ransom for the judge\u2019s release and that he personally received N300,000 as his share.<\/p>\n

He also admitted involvement in the kidnapping of a pastor of The Apostolic Church in Oron and another victim whose family paid N5 million for his release.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t use to cover our face. Before the woman judge was released, we received the sum of twenty five million Naira (N25m) as ransom from her family. My own share from the ransom was three hundred thousand Naira (N300,000).<\/p>\n

\u201cMy second operation was the one where we kidnapped an Apostolic Church pastor in Oron. I don\u2019t know how much was paid before he was released, but I was paid the sum of one hundred thousand Naira as my own share of the ransom.<\/p>\n

\u201cI also participated in another operation where we kidnapped a man whom the family later paid us the sum of five million Naira N5m and I was given the sum of fifty thousand Naira as my share from the ransom.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe usually use mini bus to carry out our operations. We also used to rob the locals and fishermen to make money,\u201d Effiong said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Effiong was arrested on 4th July, 2024, along Ikot Ekpene Road in Uyo by operatives of the State Security Service (SSS) following months of investigation into the gang\u2019s activities.<\/p>\n

During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence linking him to the gang\u2019s operations and its activities at Esong Inwang Beach.<\/p>\n

Delivering his judgment on Monday, February, 23, 2026, Justice Chigozie Sergius Onah found Effiong guilty on counts one, two, and three, holding that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.<\/p>\n

The court sentenced him to 25 years imprisonment on count one (conspiracy to commit acts of terrorism),<\/p>\n

20 years imprisonment on count two (membership of a terrorist group), and life imprisonment on count three (kidnapping).<\/p>\n

On count four, which bordered on concealment of information, the court discharged and acquitted the defendant.<\/p>\n

The life sentence is the most severe of the penalties imposed and effectively ensures that Effiong will spend the rest of his natural life in prison, subject to the provisions of the law.<\/p>\n
