Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The management of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) has said it has begun an internal investigation into claims that nurse interns were forced to pay money to sponsor the retirement ceremony of a director.<\/p>\n

The hospital reacted to an online report alleging that nurse interns were asked to contribute funds for the event.<\/p>\n

In a statement, LASUTH management denied the allegation, saying it neither approved nor had any prior knowledge of any levy imposed on nurse interns or any other staff.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wish to categorically state that LASUTH Management did not authorise, approve, direct, or have prior knowledge of any levy imposed on nurse interns or any other category of staff for the purpose of funding a retirement event,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n

The hospital explained that no such instruction was issued by the Hospital Management Board or the office of the Chief Medical Director, stressing that the claim does not reflect any official policy or decision of the institution.<\/p>\n

LASUTH also noted that nurse interns are still in training and deserve a safe, supportive, and professional learning environment.<\/p>\n

\u201cNurse interns are in training and are entitled to a supportive and professionally conducive environment,\u201d the management stated.<\/p>\n

According to the hospital, an internal review has already started to determine what truly happened. It said that if any individual or group is found to have collected money from nurse interns without approval, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken.<\/p>\n

\u201cManagement has commenced internal inquiries to ascertain the facts surrounding the claim,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n

The hospital further assured that if it is confirmed that any nurse intern paid money under such circumstances, the full amount would be refunded.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it is verified that any nurse intern made payment under such circumstances, Management assures that every naira collected will be refunded in full,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n
