Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Plateau State says it has successfully conducted party primaries in 15 of the state\u2019s 17 local government areas ahead of the local government elections scheduled for September 9.<\/p>\n

The state chairman of the party, Hanatu Gagara, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), stating that the exercise was largely peaceful across the affected councils.<\/p>\n

Gagara explained that primaries were not conducted in Mikang Local Government Area and Langtang South Local Government Area because aspirants from those areas submitted their nomination forms after the deadline for the sale of forms had expired.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe successfully conducted our primaries in 15 local government areas, and the exercise was peaceful and orderly,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened in the remaining two local governments was that the aspirants came late to obtain nomination forms. By that time, the deadline had already passed.\u201d<\/p>\n

She noted, however, that the situation might still be addressed following an extension granted by the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC).<\/p>\n

\u201cNow that PLASIEC has extended the time for primaries in line with the new Electoral Act, their cases will be reviewed. I only received the letter from the commission this afternoon, so the process has not started yet,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Gagara also expressed confidence in the party\u2019s prospects in the upcoming elections, describing the ADC as a strong opposition platform in the state.<\/p>\n

According to her, the party has fielded credible candidates for both chairmanship and councillorship positions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe we have a good chance of winning the elections. The growing number of new members and defections from other political parties shows that many people believe in our platform,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The chairman further revealed that the party\u2019s electronic membership registration exercise was ongoing across the state.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur members are very enthusiastic, particularly as the congresses approach. Many people are participating in the registration process, and we have deployed officials to various local governments to oversee the exercise,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She also encouraged existing and prospective members to validate their membership by visiting their respective ward and local government offices.<\/p>\n
