{"id":198702,"date":"2026-04-09T18:13:15","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T17:13:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/ohanaeze-bans-eze-ndigbo-title-outside-igbo-land"},"modified":"2026-04-09T19:29:34","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T18:29:34","slug":"ohanaeze-bans-eze-ndigbo-title-outside-igbo-land","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/ohanaeze-bans-eze-ndigbo-title-outside-igbo-land","title":{"rendered":"Ohanaeze Bans Eze Ndigbo Title Outside Igbo Land"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has proscribed the conferment and use of the title \u201cEze Ndigbo\u201d outside Igbo land.<\/p>\n<p>DAILY POST reports that the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator Azuta Mbata, announced this on Thursday during Ohanaeze Imeobi and General Assembly held in Enugu.<\/p>\n<p>He said that violators would face sanctions to be determined by traditional authorities.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the decision followed extensive consultations and was reached after a joint meeting involving the National Executive Committee (NEC) of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide and the leadership of the South East Council of Traditional Rulers.<\/p>\n<p>In a strongly worded address, the Ohanaeze leader said the organisation would formally communicate its position to state governments and diplomatic missions across the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSoutheast is proscribing the award of the title of Eze Ndigbo outside of Igbo land. Anybody who is being awarded that type of title anywhere outside of Igbo land is on his own. It is unknown to the Igbo people,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cWe will call upon all state governors and correspond to all embassies in the world informing them about the position of Igbo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mbata stressed that the position of Ohanaeze was final and binding, declaring that the title, when conferred outside the South-East, would no longer be recognised by the Igbo people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe position of Eze Ndigbo anywhere outside Igbo land is hereby alienated and proscribed. That is the position of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The President-General further disclosed that consultations were ongoing with traditional rulers across Igbo land to determine appropriate sanctions for defaulters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will determine, in consultation with the kings of Igbo land, what the punishment will be for anybody who goes against this position, and that punishment will be implemented at your village level,\u201d Mbata stated.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, enforcement of such sanctions would be carried out through local structures, including town unions and community leadership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour hometown, your town union will be under injunction to implement that punishment, but we are going to declare that punishment after due consultation,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The declaration marks a significant move by Ohanaeze to assert cultural authority and standardise traditional titles among Igbo communities both within Nigeria and in the diaspora.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the climax of the meeting was the adoption of the reviewed Constitution of Ohanaeze Ndigbo by the General Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>A motion for the adoption, which was moved by the retired Archbishop of Enugu Ecclesiastical Province, Anglican Communion, Most Rev Emmanuel Chukwuma, received overwhelming endorsement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Nigeria<\/span> Follow <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Africa-Press<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria.
