{"id":198918,"date":"2026-04-12T20:37:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-12T19:37:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/over-60-of-nigerian-communities-affected-by-poverty"},"modified":"2026-04-12T20:37:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-12T19:37:07","slug":"over-60-of-nigerian-communities-affected-by-poverty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/over-60-of-nigerian-communities-affected-by-poverty","title":{"rendered":"Over 60% of Nigerian Communities Affected by Poverty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Public affairs commentator Mahdi Shehu has expressed concern over worsening living conditions in Nigeria, saying poverty is now visibly affecting more than 60 per cent of communities across the country.<\/p>\n<p>His comments came in reaction to a recent World Bank assessment indicating that Nigeria\u2019s poverty rate has risen to about 63 per cent, despite a reported easing in inflation.<\/p>\n<p>In a post shared on X on Sunday, Shehu said the reality of hardship is evident to anyone who pays attention to daily life in communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust look around your neighbourhood, visit the markets, hotels, observe people on the street as they walk, watch their faces in grief,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the physical appearance of many citizens reflects the depth of the economic struggle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObserve the shrinking nature of their bodies for those you are familiar with,\u201d he said, insisting that the level of poverty is no longer hidden.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, what is being experienced across many parts of the country reflects a deeper crisis that should not be ignored or denied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the current reality which is being denied serially and daily,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p>Shehu warned that refusing to accept the situation could worsen the country\u2019s challenges, stressing the need for honest assessment and urgent action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccepting reality is the first step to a solution.
