Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong> <\/span>French authorities rejected the asylum request submitted by journalist and whistleblower Efrem Yaliki, who hails from the Central African Republic and whose testimonies helped expose the propaganda network of the Russian “Wagner” group in his country, according to a local source for whistleblower protection in Africa.<\/p>\n

The organization announced that it has filed an appeal with the National Court of Asylum in France, which theoretically serves as a position to implement the deportation decision. It described the rejection as “completely incomprehensible,” condemning what it viewed as a abandonment of the man that could expose him and his family to serious retaliatory actions.<\/p>\n

Who is Efrem Yaliki?<\/b><\/p>\n

After arriving in France, Yaliki participated in the international investigation “The Propaganda Machine,” led by a journalistic union in partnership with a French radio station. He revealed in late 2024 the depth of media manipulation practiced by the Wagner group in the Central African Republic, operations in which he himself had participated before defecting from the group.<\/p>\n

According to the French radio station, more than 200 media outlets worldwide republished those leaks, which led the European Union to impose sanctions on Mikhail Brodnikov, responsible for Russian communications in the Central African Republic.<\/p>\n

The local source reported that Yaliki was supposed to join his family in Paris in February 2024 with the approval of French authorities, but he was intercepted at Bangui airport, accused of treason, and his documents were confiscated. He could only reunite with his family after a long exile and a tumultuous journey through the Democratic Republic of the Congo, aided by a travel document issued by the E\u0301lyse\u0301e Palace.<\/p>\n

His lawyers, according to the same source, believe that the initial decision from the French Office for the Protection of Refugees and Stateless Persons did not sufficiently consider the specific threats associated with his status as a whistleblower, a category that remains legally ambiguous in French law.<\/p>\n

Warnings of Deportation Risks<\/b><\/p>\n

The European organization INPACT, which specializes in tracking Wagner’s activities, warned that returning Yaliki to the Central African Republic “would put him at imminent risk of death,” noting that the Russian group “recently demonstrated its violent reach by beheading captured individuals.”<\/p>\n

The organization stated that a memo submitted to French authorities criticized Yaliki for continuing to play the role of a “puppet journalist” before leaving the country, arguing that he did so “to stay alive” after being strongly suspected of separating from the group, and that this assessment “reflects a deep ignorance of the nature of the Russian actor.”<\/p>\n

The organization quoted Henry Tully, the strategy director at the whistleblower protection platform in Africa, stating that “France’s commitment to combating media disinformation in Africa loses all credibility as long as it does not guarantee protection for those who expose its mechanisms,” adding that “abandoning Efrem after promising to support him is not just a mistake, but a stark contradiction.”<\/p>\n

The local source noted that this rejection puts France’s credibility as a haven for whistleblowers at stake, especially as Russian interventions in Africa are under close scrutiny. The whistleblower protection platform fears that this precedent may deter other potential sources from cooperating with Western media.<\/p>\n

Yaliki is now awaiting the decision from the National Court of Asylum, while the source indicated that if the rejection is confirmed, he may find himself forced to leave French territory, which, according to his supporters, carries the risk of physical retaliation against him and his family.<\/p>\n
