President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi<\/a> and sentenced to 15 years in jail in a mass trial with more than 700 co-defendants.<\/p>\nPretrial Rights International, which represents Kassem, in a statement said: \u201cLast Thursday, he ceased taking liquids and was shortly thereafter transferred to a local hospital, where he passed away today in the late afternoon (local time).<\/p>\n
\u201cA diabetic with a heart condition, prison officials limited access to necessary medications and medical care for the entirety of his (Kassem\u2019s) detention. He remained in pretrial detention for over five years\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Egyptian foreign ministry informed the family around three hours ago that Kassem has died,\u201d a source close to the family told ABC News.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe authorities did not provide any reasons for his death, which is always the case in such incidents,\u201d the source said.<\/p>\n
David Schenker, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, said he and the U.S. State Department must continue to raise \u201cour serious concerns\u201d about the human rights of Americans detained in Egypt.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m deeply saddened today to learn of the death of U.S. citizen Mustafa Kassem. His death in custody was needless, tragic and avoidable,\u201d Schenker told ABC News.<\/p>\n
