{"id":2441,"date":"2019-01-14T15:44:28","date_gmt":"2019-01-14T15:44:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/nigeria\/?p=2441"},"modified":"2019-01-14T15:44:28","modified_gmt":"2019-01-14T15:44:28","slug":"activists-arrested-for-demanding-n50m-bribe-to-withdraw-petition-from-efcc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/all-news\/activists-arrested-for-demanding-n50m-bribe-to-withdraw-petition-from-efcc","title":{"rendered":"Activists Arrested For Demanding N50m Bribe To Withdraw Petition From EFCC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two human rights activists have been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly demanding a bribe from\u00a0Wahum\u00a0Nigeria Limited.<\/p>\n<p>According to The Punch,\u00a0Dandy\u00a0Eze,\u00a0President of the Path of Peace Initiatives, and one\u00a0Solomon Johnson, approached\u00a0Wahum\u00a0Nigeria Limited\u00a0in 2018 to\u00a0demand\u00a0N50million to help facilitate the withdrawal of a petition written against the company, which they claimed was being investigated by the EFCC.<\/p>\n<p>The sum of N1million had already been collected by the duo as part payment through a First Bank account number 3081329952 operated by Johnson, according to investigation.<\/p>\n<p>They were arraigned before a Lagos State Special Offences Court on four counts bordering on conspiracy to commit felony and acceptance of bribe to the tune of N50milliom.<\/p>\n<p>The charges read: &#8220;That you, Dandy\u00a0Eze, being the President of the Path of Peace Initiatives, and Solomon Johnson, on or about November 23, 2018, in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, solicited the sum of N50m only as bribe in order to facilitate the withdrawal of a petition written against\u00a0Wahum\u00a0Nigeria Limited from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat you, Dandy\u00a0Eze, being the President of the Path of Peace Initiatives, and Solomon Johnson, on or about November 26, 2018, in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this honorable court, did accept the sum of N1m as bribe through the First Bank account number 3081329952 operated by Solomon Johnson from\u00a0Wahum\u00a0Nigeria Limited in order to facilitate the withdrawal of a petition written against\u00a0Wahum\u00a0Nigeria Limited from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.<\/p>\n<p>In view of their plea, the prosecuting counsel, George\u00a0Chia-Yakua, asked the court for a trial date and also prayed that the defendants be remanded in prison custody.<\/p>\n<p>Counsel for the defendants, Terry\u00a0Adeniji, told the court that he had just been briefed about the case.\u00a0Adeniji, therefore, asked the court for a short date to enable him to file a proper bail application.\u00a0He also prayed the court to remand the defendants in the EFCC custody.<\/p>\n<p>Chia-Yakua\u00a0responded and\u00a0urged the court to refuse the prayer of the defence counsel to remand the defendants in the EFCC custody.<\/p>\n<p>The presiding judge, Justice\u00a0Mojisola\u00a0Dada, adjourned the matter till February 14 and 15, 2019, for the hearing of the bail application and commencement of trial.<\/p>\n<p>She, thereafter, remanded the suspects in prison custody.<\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix after-story-ad-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"views-row col-small-6 col-large-4\">\n<div class=\"block-module block-module-ad block-module-ad-300x250\">\n<div class=\"adunit-parent block-module-image-wrapper\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two human rights activists have been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly demanding a bribe from\u00a0Wahum\u00a0Nigeria Limited.
