{"id":27083,"date":"2020-07-08T12:48:20","date_gmt":"2020-07-08T12:48:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/nigeria\/?p=27083"},"modified":"2020-07-08T12:48:20","modified_gmt":"2020-07-08T12:48:20","slug":"efcc-why-magu-was-arrested-serap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/all-news\/efcc-why-magu-was-arrested-serap","title":{"rendered":"EFCC: Why Magu was arrested \u2013 SERAP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Africa Press-Nigeria:<\/p>\n<p>The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has expressed concerns over the arrest of acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu.<\/p>\n<p>SERAP said that Magu might have been arrested due to a \u201cpower-play at the highest levels of government\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The EFCC boss is still being detained in police custody on the orders of a presidential panel probing alleged infractions against him.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, SERAP\u2019s Deputy Director Kolawole Oluwadare, said: \u201cThe reported statement by a member of PACAC seems to suggest that Magu\u2019s arrest may be politically motivated and aims to undermine the independence and freedom of action of the EFCC\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The body check said if true, it would make a mockery of President Muhammadu Buhari\u2019s often-repeated commitment to fight grand corruption and the impunity of perpetrators.<\/p>\n<p>SERAP urged the authorities to afford Magu his constitutionally and internationally guaranteed fair trial rights.<\/p>\n<p>It stated that Magu must either be charged with a recognizable criminal offence or released immediately and allowed to do his job without fear of reprisals.<\/p>\n<p>The body said Nigerian authorities cannot continue to keep Magu in detention under suspicious circumstances without bringing any legitimate charges against him in violation of national and international law.<\/p>\n<p>It added that they must support the independence and freedom of action of anti-corruption agencies and institutions if they are to be able to genuinely fight grand corruption.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa Press-Nigeria: The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has expressed concerns over the arrest of acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu.
