With a view to resolving the worsening socio-political situation in Mali, former president Goodluck Jonathan has been appointed as a special envoy for the West African nation.<\/p>\n
The high-profile appointment was given to Jonathan on Tuesday, July 14, by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).<\/p>\n
As part of his duties, the former Nigerian leader is to convene a series of talks with all President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, opposition bigwigs, civil society as well as religious bodies.<\/p>\n
The letter of appointment (made available to Legit.ng) from the president of ECOWAS’ commission, Jean-Claude Kassi Brou to Jonathan read: \u201cGiven your position as the former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the great role and contributions your tenure offered to the maintenance of peace, security and stability in our region, I have the honour, in consultation with the Chair of the Authority, H.E. Issoufou Mahamadou, President of the Republic of Niger, to communicate to you, the decision to appoint you as ECOWAS Special Envoy for the sociopolitical crisis in Mali.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mali has been engulfed in political unrest following the outcome of the elections conducted in March and April, local displeasure over the current administration’s handling of insurgency and unstable economy.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that Jonathan had sent a congratulatory message to the new president of the Republic of Burundi, Evariste Ndayishimiye.<\/p>\n
Legit.ng gathered that in a thread of tweets on Friday, June 19, the former president felicitated with Ndayishimiye who was sworn-in as the ninth president of Burundi.<\/p>\n
He also extended his appreciation to the good people of the Republic of Burundi for the seamless transition, urging him to give his task of leading his people his best shot to be able to deliver peace and the dividends of democracy to the people of his country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
