{"id":2745,"date":"2019-01-18T16:50:39","date_gmt":"2019-01-18T16:50:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/nigeria\/?p=2745"},"modified":"2019-01-18T16:50:39","modified_gmt":"2019-01-18T16:50:39","slug":"boko-haram-claims-attack-on-northeast-nigerian-town-of-rann-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/all-news\/boko-haram-claims-attack-on-northeast-nigerian-town-of-rann-video","title":{"rendered":"Boko Haram claims attack on northeast Nigerian town of Rann: video"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Maiduguri (Reuters) &#8211; Islamist insurgency Boko Haram has claimed it carried out Monday\u2019s attack on the northeast Nigerian town of Rann, according to a video released on Thursday by Nigerian journalist Ahmad Salkida.<\/p>\n<p>Reuters had originally reported that Islamic State West Africa (ISWA), an offshoot of Boko Haram that is now the dominant group, was responsible for the attack, citing sources.<\/p>\n<p>If Boko Haram\u2019s involvement is confirmed, it would mean that both ISWA and Boko Haram are able to overrun Nigerian military positions in the northeast.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"DPSlot_container StandardArticleBody_dp-slot-inline StandardArticleBody_inline-canvas\" data-ad-type=\"canvas\">\n<p>Major General Benson Akinroluyo told Reuters the video was recorded during the attack on Rann, but that troops are now on the ground, and that he had visited the town.<\/p>\n<p>The attack comes amidst a surge of assaults by the militants, just weeks before Feb. 16 elections in which President Muhammadu Buhari &#8211; who had vowed to restore security to Nigeria &#8211; seeks a second term.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, ISWA launched a series of attacks that saw them take the town of Baga, the Nigerian headquarters of a multi-country force formed by Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon and Niger to fight the extremists, sending more than 30,000 people fleeing.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Attribution_container\">\n<div class=\"Attribution_attribution\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Maiduguri (Reuters) &#8211; Islamist insurgency Boko Haram has claimed it carried out Monday\u2019s attack on the northeast Nigerian town of Rann, according to a video released on Thursday by Nigerian journalist Ahmad Salkida.
