Oil prices hit weaker levels on Thursday following a shock build in United States oil inventories and as low fuel consumption hurt prices.<\/p>\n
U.S crude and distillate stocks increased abruptly and fuel demand dived last week, the Energy Information Administration said Wednesday, with the U.S. seeing a more turbulent time in an attempt to flatten the curve of the pandemic outbreak after reporting a new surge of cases.<\/p>\n
Brent crude dipped by 43 cents or 0.97% to $43.86 a barrel at 14:31 West Africa Time and U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude by 37 cents or 0.88% to $41.53 per barrel.<\/p>\n
Nigeria\u2019s banner crude grade, Bonny Light, slipped by $1.07 or 2.39% to $43.63 at the Wednesday session.<\/p>\n
That same day, another major national grade, Qua Iboe, gained 71 cents or 1.62%, closing at $44.41 per barrel.<\/p>\n
Oil prices have been marking time since kissing their highest points in four months earlier this week amidst optimism surrounding reports of a vaccine for the virus<\/p>\n
\u201cNormally inventories of fuel would be heavily drawn upon, but the surge in Covid-19 case numbers has stymied the recovery,\u201d ANZ said of typically high demand during the high point of U.S. summer driving season.<\/p>\n
Oil storage climbed by 4.9 million barrels in the week to 17th July to 536.6 million barrels, dwarfing a Reuters poll\u2019s projection of 2.1 million.<\/p>\n
Output expanded to 11.1 million barrels per day (bpd) by 100,000 bpd.<\/p>\n
The world\u2019s biggest oil consumer posted over a thousand deaths from Covid-19 on Tuesday, a Reuters tally showed, the first time since 10th June that U.S. had surpassed that grievous record, as California approached New York\u2019s figure in total infections.<\/p>\n
President Donald Trump believes the public health crisis will aggravate before improving, a turn-back from its earlier passionate emphasis on restarting the economy.<\/p>\n
Escalation in the tension between Washington and Beijing also strained prices.<\/p>\n
