Two leading clubs in the Nigerian topflight, Enugu Rangers football club and Nasarawa United have postponed their resumption date following the decision of the Presidential Task Force of COVID-19 to place another ban on all contact sports.<\/p>\n
Rangers General Manager, Prince Davidson Owumi stated that the postponement became necessary due largely to the recent announcement from NCDC and PTF over the COVID-19 health protocols.<\/p>\n
“We are a law-abiding institution and will in no way flaunt laws put in place by a well-constituted government body like NCDC and PTF.<\/p>\n
The earlier information at our disposal made us make our earlier announcement for our players to return, but with further clarifications from NCDC and PTF, we are compelled to direct our players against returning to the camp.<\/p>\n
“When we get clearance, they will be informed of when to return,” Owumi said.<\/p>\n
In the same vein, Nasarawa United players would have been a day in camp today, if not for the new directive from PTF that all contact sports should stay suspended.<\/p>\n
The club chairman, Barr. Isaac Danladi has said a new date for resumption shall be announced in due course.<\/p>\n
It will be recalled the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) recently announced that the 2020\/2021 league will kick off either this month or next month and end in May 2021 subject to the full reopening of the country and the approval of the health authorities.<\/p>\n
However, the Sports Ministry last week restated that the kickoff date would only be determined by the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, which has already sanctioned the resumption of non-contact sports.<\/p>\n
The PTF has also ruled off the resumption of football activities, saying the country is not yet safe for such activities to return in view of the existing cases of COVI-19.<\/p>\n
