The election of the new Emir of Zazzau was held Thursday night in Kaduna.<\/p>\n

The late monarch, Shehu Idris, passed away last Sunday.<\/p>\n

In his honour, Kaduna State Government declared a 3-day mourning period.<\/p>\n

Idris ascended the position in 1975, succeeding Emir Muhammadu Aminu.<\/p>\n

His successor will emerge from one of the three ruling houses of the emirate.<\/p>\n

The incoming King will have to be a descendant of Musa (the first Emir of the Mallawa clan); or the descendant of Yamusa (the first Emir of the Bare-bari clan); or the descendant of Abdulkarimu (the first Emir of the Katsinawa clan).<\/p>\n

All candidates were expected to express their interests after the third day prayers for the late Emir.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the process, seven princes declared their intention to contest.<\/p>\n

Two of the candidates are from the Bare-Bari clan, and the Mallawa clan.<\/p>\n

The five others are from the Katsianwa clan \u2013 Iya, Turaki, Uban Gari, Dan Galadima, and Sarkin Kudu.<\/p>\n

Five kingmakers of Zazzau Emirate Council voted.<\/p>\n

They are Wazirin Zazzau \u2013 Ibrahim Aminu; Makama Karami \u2013 Muhammad Abbas; Fagachin Zazzau \u2013 Umar Muhammad; Limamin Juma\u2019a \u2013 Dalhatu Kasim and Limamin Kona \u2013 Muhammad Aliyu.<\/p>\n

The election had in attendance Secretary to the State Government, the Head of Service, the Commissioner of Police, among others.<\/p>\n

These include Minimum qualification (BSc or HND) \u2013 15%; Experience as a District Head \u2013 20%; Experience in Public Service \u2013 10%; No proven adverse report \u2013 10%; Relationship with the public \u2013 15%; National Award \u2013 5% and Physical fitness \u2013 10%.<\/p>\n

Three of the kingmakers reportedly voted for Bashir Aminu \u2013 Iyan Zazzau.<\/p>\n

The chartered accountant and businessman, regarded as the most popular candidate, has served the longest as a titleholder and District Head in the emirate<\/p>\n

Aminu Idris \u2013 Turakin Zazzau, and Muhammadu Munir Ja\u2019afaru \u2013 the Yeriman Zazzau, reportedly got one vote each.<\/p>\n

Three sons of the late Emir who expressed interest are Bashir Shehu Idris \u2013 Uban Gari; Sambo Shehu Idris \u2013 Sarkin Kudu; and Aimu Umaru Idris \u2013 Dan Galadima.<\/p>\n

The kingmakers have submitted their report to the state government and are due to meet Governor Nasir El-Rufai Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n

The names sent for \u201cconsideration and further necessary action\u201d are Bashir Aminu, Aminu Idris and Munir Ja\u2019afaru.<\/p>\n

The governor is expected to make an announcement on the process.<\/p>\n
