The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, on Wednesday directed the Committee on Established and Public Service Matters to screen the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.)\u2019s nominees for appointment as Chairman, Director General and commissioners of the National Pension Commission.<\/p>\n
The Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe, who seconded the motion, moved by the Senate Leader, Yahaya Abdullahi, for the screening and confirmation of the nominees, however, maintained his position on the matter.<\/p>\n
He said, \u201cI second the motion, but I still maintain my objection to the nomination of Aisha Umar for the position of the director-general.\u201d<\/p>\n
Abaribe had on Tuesday objected to the appointment of Umar as the DG of the commission.<\/p>\n
The Minority Leader declared that Umar, from the North-East, should not have replaced the former DG, Mrs Chinelo Anohu-Amazu, who is from the South East.<\/p>\n
Abaribe said Buhari\u2019s action was a flagrant breach of the Act that established PenCom.<\/p>\n
Abaribe argued that Anohu-Amazu\u2019s successor should come from the South East.<\/p>\n
A senator told our correspondent on condition of anonymity on Wednesday that the South-East caucus in the National Assembly would meet again to strategise on how to oppose Umar\u2019s confirmation.<\/p>\n
The senator, who is one of those opposed to the nomination of Umar, confirmed that his colleagues across party divides from the South-West, South-East and North-Central geopolitical zones met on Tuesday night in Abuja on the issue.<\/p>\n
He said the meeting was meant to perfect opposition to Buhari\u2019s nominee for DG of the agency.<\/p>\n
