{"id":33362,"date":"2020-12-11T18:17:26","date_gmt":"2020-12-11T18:17:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/nigeria\/?p=33362"},"modified":"2020-12-11T18:17:26","modified_gmt":"2020-12-11T18:17:26","slug":"insecurity-in-nigeria-not-as-bad-as-it-was-seven-years-ago-minister-of-defence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/insecurity-in-nigeria-not-as-bad-as-it-was-seven-years-ago-minister-of-defence","title":{"rendered":"Insecurity in Nigeria not as bad as it was seven years ago  \u2014Minister of Defence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\">Africa-Press<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/nigeria\">Nigeria<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>The Minister of Defence, Bashir Magashi on Thursday said that insecurity in Nigeria had been made better than what it used to be seven years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The minister also said that Nigerians have a problem of forgetting things so soon and have forgotten the insecurity situation in the country before President Muhammadu Buhari took over power in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>According to the minister, the Nigerian Army remained one of the best in Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The minister\u2019s comment is coming at a period Nigerians have continued to mount pressure on President Buhari to sack his service chiefs over the worsening insecurity situation in the country.<\/p>\n<p>But the minister, while speaking on a Channels TV programme said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem of this country is that we always forget too soon. Look in 2015 backwards, 2014, 2013; if you remember the (insecurity) situation in this country. In Kano, 200 people were massacred in the mosque. The Emir of Kano was also attacked. The road from Kano to Kaduna and Abuja were impassable. We had over 20 roadblocks from Kaduna to Abuja. It takes you almost 15 hours to reach where you are coming from. Even in Abuja, there were bombings. Everywhere in Nigeria in those years, you find that there were commotions, no security, people can\u2019t even move.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen this government came, you know what we did. In Borno state, about 20 local governments were under capture by Boko Haram. But as soon as Buhari came, they were all subdued and we took over all these things and we even said we technically defeated this Boko Haram.<\/p>\n<p><b>READ ALSO: INSECURITY: Why we invited Buhari \u2013 Reps<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo piece of land is occupied by Boko Haram in Borno state. The only thing normally with the kind of insurgent operation is that they want to surprise you, embarrass you, and do whatever they think that would attract international news or the national news or cause commotion within the environment they operate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that is what they have been doing, and that is why we are trying very hard to adopt tactics and other forms of operations in order to stop this kind of people embarrassing this country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are putting in place everything you can think of, tactically and operationally, in order to return this country to the very peaceful country we know it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He continued by saying, \u201cAt the moment, most people think because of the sporadic attacks here and there, we lost control or we are not doing our best. Most of you know the problem of this country. The armed forces are overstretched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe other thing that we may have gotten, we are not supported by some of these countries we call our friends. They are not ready to give us what we need \u2014 with the money we have and everything. But certainly, what I am trying to say is that Nigeria is better than what we were seven years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Africa, the Nigerian army should be adjudged one of the best. We have conducted so many operations outside Nigeria. We went to ECOMOG (Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group); we did the very best we can. We went to Sierra Leone; we did the very best we can and some other places.
