The visiting priest in St. Michael\u2019s Catholic Parish, Amakohia Owerri in Imo state, Reverend Father Longinus Chinagorom, gave the admonition during a church mass on Sunday.<\/p>\n

He said most of the problems currently confronting the nation were caused by \u2018fake news\u2019.<\/p>\n

According to the cleric, \u201cThe press is the mirror and conscience of the society. As such, whatever they send to the public travels fast like the wild fire.<\/p>\n

\u201cFake news has done more harm than good to Nigeria. Our pressmen have deviated from the core value of their profession to engage in sensational reports merely to sell their products. This is a misnomer.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook at what is happening today in our country. Crisis has taken the larger part of the nation. In this situation, the journalists are expected to inform the public with verifiable news to avoid aggravating the situation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI urge men of the fourth estate of the realm to restore the dignity of the profession by engaging in investigative journalism in order to save the nation from imminent collapse.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Catholic Priest however urged the government of the day to proffer lasting solutions to the prevailing security situation in the country by finding the root cause of it.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
