{"id":43204,"date":"2021-05-17T15:39:12","date_gmt":"2021-05-17T15:39:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/?p=43204"},"modified":"2021-05-17T14:21:33","modified_gmt":"2021-05-17T14:21:33","slug":"long-working-hours-led-to-745000-deaths-un","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/long-working-hours-led-to-745000-deaths-un","title":{"rendered":"Long working hours led to 745,000 deaths \u2013 UN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\">Nigeria<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) has said that long working hours led to 745,000 deaths in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>NAN reports that the WHO and ILO in a statement released on Monday estimated that 398,000 people died from stroke while 347,000 died from heart disease due to long working hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis work-related disease burden is particularly significant in men as 72 per cent of deaths occurred among males.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c55 or more hours per week is associated with an estimated 35 per cent higher risk of a stroke and a 17 per cent higher risk of dying from heart disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso, the number of people working long hours is increasing as teleworking has become the norm in many industries since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should note that no job is worth the risk of stroke or heart disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernments, employers and workers need to work together to agree on limits to protect the health of workers,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria.
