The National Judicial Council has set up a five-man panel to investigate the suspended Chief Judge of Nigeria, CJN, Walter Onnoghen over allegations levelled against him.<\/p>\n
The NJC\u2019s panel will also investigate the acting CJN, Justice Tanko Muhammad.<\/p>\n
The panel is to be headed by a retired Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice S.A Akintan, who like other members of the committee, is a member of the council.<\/p>\n
According to NJC\u2019s Director of Information, Soji Oye, in a statement on Wednesday, the council took the decision after accepting \u201cthe result of the preliminary assessment of the petitions\u201d against the duo.<\/p>\n
He said the council considered the \u201cpetitions to be worthy of further investigation and should not be terminated under Rule 17 of the Judicial Discipline Regulations of the Council.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cConsequently, the council constituted a five-member NJC Investigation Committee pursuant to Rule 20(1) of the Judicial Discipline Regulations under the chairmanship of Hon. Mr. Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.\u201d<\/p>\n
NJC added that it received a new petition against Justice Muhammad from the Action People\u2019s Party.<\/p>\n
