Africa-Press<\/a> – Nigeria<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>The Country Director, Actionaid Nigeria, Madam Ene Obi, has identified poverty as the main driver of sexual abuse and early pregnancies among teenagers in the rural communities of Akwa Ibom State.<\/p>\n

Obi stated this on Thursday during the Local Rights Programme Learning and Close Out Meeting held at the Emerald Event Centre, along Four lane, Uyo, the state capital.<\/p>\n

She said that Actionaid\u2019s collaboration with the state government, the African Human Development Centre and other civil society organisations in the last 14 years has tackled the challenge of rural poverty in the state.<\/p>\n

According to her, the partnership has led to five victims of sexual abuse and tenage pregnancies reintegrated to their families and supported back to school among other interventions.<\/p>\n

\u201cOver 500 women participate in the Women Peer Education Programme which has now developed into a Network of Women Peer Educators of Nigeria. The empowerment from this network has led to the appointment of five women to serve in leadership capacities such as LGA Supervisory Councillors, Ward executives and members of village council.<\/p>\n

\u201cFive victims of sexual abuse and tenage pregnancies who drop out of school and ostracised by their parents have been reintegrated to their families and supported back to school. They now attend school on regular basis and doing very well in their exams\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She explained that the poverty level among widows and uneducated women have affected their income drastically rendering them incapacitated to care for their children, lamenting that such problems have contributed to the hundreds of out-of-school children in rural Akwa Ibom.<\/p>\n

She said though Actionaid is pulling out the state, she assured that several ongoing programmes would continue to thrive as they move to the neighbouring state of Cross River in continuation of their campaigns to lift the vulnerable ones out of poverty.<\/p>\n

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO), African Human Development Centre, Prof. Gabriel Umoh, commended Actionaid Nigeria and various agencies of government including the Ministries of Women Affairs and Social Welfare; Economic Development, Agriculture, Education and the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and others for being partners in progress to address the challenges of rural poverty in Akwa Ibom.<\/p>\n

He explained that working in partnership with Actionaid has been a rewarding experience adding that through funding, the interventions were carried out in the areas of education, health, vocational training, agriculture and other palliatives.<\/p>\n

The Professor of Agricultural and Development Economics at the University of Uyo said, \u201cgovernment cannot shoulder the entire responsibility of addressing the challenges of human development alone\u201d, hence the need for more private sector participation in the task of lifting the people out of poverty.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
