{"id":48452,"date":"2021-08-16T16:06:33","date_gmt":"2021-08-16T15:06:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/?p=48452"},"modified":"2021-08-16T15:32:51","modified_gmt":"2021-08-16T14:32:51","slug":"despite-suspension-of-sit-at-home-awka-onitsha-residents-stay-at-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/despite-suspension-of-sit-at-home-awka-onitsha-residents-stay-at-home","title":{"rendered":"Despite suspension of sit-at-home, Awka, Onitsha residents stay at home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\">Nigeria<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Despite the order by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), suspending the \u2018every Monday\u2019 sit-at-home protest declared in solidarity with Nnamdi Kanu, residents of Awka and Onitsha are still unsure to venture out.<\/p>\n<p>Calls made to persons in Onitsha showed that streets are still deserted as at 8am on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>A source, Mr Theophilus Omaka, a trader in Onitsha main market told DAILY POST that as at 8am, there were only few traders who had come to the market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe market opens at 7am every morning, and usually, on a Monday, after a long weekend, traders itch to come to their shops, and that means that as early as 6am, most traders are already waiting for market officials to open their shops, so they can go to work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut today, it is already 8am, and the markets are already open, but only a few traders have arrived. As I was coming to market from Fegge where I live, I found the whole street scanty, unlike what used to happen on Monday mornings when there is usually a rush,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Nnamdi Kanu: IPOB restricts movement into Onitsha, Nnewi, markets, shops closed [VIDEO]<\/p>\n<p>In Awka, DAILY POST correspondent moved around to also find shops still closed as at 8am.<\/p>\n<p>Some residents, who spoke to this newspaper, said the news of the suspension was not widely circulated.<\/p>\n<p>A trader at Aroma, popularly known as Oga Boss, who traders in phone parts said: \u201cI didn\u2019t plan to go out today because of the sit-at-home. I\u2019m just hearing it from you that it has been suspended.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>IPOB, speaking through its publicity secretary, Mr Emma Powerful had two days ago called off the sit-at-home order, saying that the exercise will henceforth hold only on days its leader, Kanu would appear in court.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria.
