Africa-Press<\/a> – Nigeria<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Houses and cars were partially submerged during the weekend following the heavy downpour that occurred in Ikare-Akoko, the headquarters of Akoko North East Local Government of Ondo State.<\/p>\n

The downpour which lasted for more than five hours led to heavy flooding in the ancient town which led to the destruction of property.<\/p>\n

With the flooding causing gridlock on major roads in the town, a popular river known as River Dada overflowed its brim and flooded a church, three hotels and some houses in the town.<\/p>\n

Also, at Ministry axis of Agbaluku, the bridge in the area became impassable for anyone, particularly vehicles and motorcycles as the road was heavily flooded.<\/p>\n

Many travellers who were transiting through the town had to pass the night in Ikare as they could not continue their journey due to the flood.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the situation, the Director of Environmental Services in the area, Mrs Yemisi Adeniyi lamented that the incident occurs regularly during rainy season because people block the waterways with refuse.<\/p>\n

Adeniyi who urged those involved in such habit as well as those who build houses close to River bank to desist, fumed that government will not hesitate to ensure that the culprits face the wrath of the law.<\/p>\n

Also speaking, a community leader, Chief James Oladetohun urged the contractor handling Ikare dualisation road to complete the project on time in order to prevent the situation from reoccurring in future.<\/p>\n
