Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Nigerian Navy (NN) has signed a contract with Dearsan Shipyard Limited of Turkey for two new Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) expected to be delivered in 2024.<\/p>\n

Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo noted that Nigeria\u2019s aggressive presence in the maritime environment has led to a drastic reduction in criminality.<\/p>\n

Gambo said the feat was acknowledged by the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) in its Global Piracy Report of July 14, 201, indicating the lowest piracy and armed attacks against ships in 27 years.<\/p>\n

The Naval chief said this was corroborated in October by the Defence Web maritime security which reported a further decline in cases of piracy and assault in the Gulf of Guinea (GoG).<\/p>\n

Gambo said the contract signing was another milestone in efforts to achieve NN\u2019s 2021-2030 Strategic Plan.<\/p>\n

The CNS confirmed President Muhammadu Buhari gave the approval for the High Endurance OPVs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe OPVs will conduct search and rescue operations, anti-piracy, anti-smuggling and anti-drug trafficking operations, disaster relief operations, among others\u201d, he disclosed.<\/p>\n

Gambo added that NN\u2019s partnership with Messrs Dearsan would lead to more fruitful engagements between Nigeria and Turkey.<\/p>\n

Chief Executive Officer, Murat Gordi assured that the company would build best-class vessels for the Navy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis project will further strengthen ties between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Turkey through added value in technological transfer and expertise\u201d, Gordi said.<\/p>\n

In August, the Nigerian Army and its Turkish counterpart agreed to strengthen military bilateral relations to tackle terrorism.<\/p>\n
