{"id":54133,"date":"2021-11-27T16:29:23","date_gmt":"2021-11-27T15:29:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/?p=54133"},"modified":"2021-11-27T16:17:34","modified_gmt":"2021-11-27T15:17:34","slug":"why-endsars-panels-reports-may-become-another-oputa-panel-festus-ogun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/why-endsars-panels-reports-may-become-another-oputa-panel-festus-ogun","title":{"rendered":"Why EndSARS panels, reports may become another Oputa panel \u2013 Festus Ogun"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Festus Ogun, a legal practitioner, has expressed fear that EndSARS panels constituted by state governments may not achieve much.<\/p>\n<p>The activist said over the years, the authorities consistently fail to act on recommendations of commissions.<\/p>\n<p>He observed that despite the proceedings, revelations and findings, police brutality persists.<\/p>\n<p>The legal practitioner lamented how citizens are still being arrested and arbitrarily put in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Ogun told DAILY POST that the panels appear to be \u201ca calculated strategy by the authorities to give false hope for victims of police gangsterism\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy position hinges on the fact that the law places the implementation of the findings at the discretion of the President who himself has a stained human rights record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer asked if Nigerians had forgotten the experience with the Human Rights Violations Investigation Commission (Oputa Panel).<\/p>\n<p>Formed by ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo after the return to democracy, the body investigated rights abuses during military rule from 1984 to 1999.<\/p>\n<p>The Principal Partner of Festus Ogun Legal recalled that Justice Chukwudifu Oputa and his team submitted their report in 2002.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe recommendations are yet to be implemented, almost two decades after.
