Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Nigerian Maritime Law Association (NMLA) has condemned the alleged execution of four \u201cpirates\u201d in the Gulf of Guinea (GoG).<\/p>\n

They were reportedly killed by the Danish Navy from their frigate, ESBERN SNARE, operating within the waters.<\/p>\n

NMLA President, Funke Agbor and Secretary, Emeka Akabogu, issued a statement to that effect on Saturday.<\/p>\n

The legal practitioners expressed concerns about the sanctity of Nigeria\u2019s sovereignty.<\/p>\n

Stressing that it supports efforts to rid the GoG of criminality, NMLA said it was worried about the application of rule of law and respect for protocols of engagement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe incident was alleged to have occurred in international waters, 25 to 30 nautical miles south of Nigeria\u2019s territorial waters\u201d, it noted.<\/p>\n

NMLA called for an independent inquiry to establish the location of the incident \u201cand whether there had been compliance with the relevant rules of engagement\u201d.<\/p>\n

The statement urged the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to formulate and implement a maritime strategy for the nation.<\/p>\n

It pointed out that this is mandated by the Suppression of Piracy and Other Maritime Offences Act 2019.<\/p>\n

The Act incorporates strategic security synergy between all law enforcement and commercial shipping actors.<\/p>\n
