Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Experts and practitioners of traditional medicine have advised the government to integrate traditional discoveries into Modern Medical Practices.<\/p>\n

This is as the Chief Medical Director, Osun State University (UNIOSUN) Teaching Hospital, Professor Peter Olaitan has charged scientists and researchers in the country to look into traditional medications; refine them and integrate discoveries to meet the needs of modern-day medicine.<\/p>\n

The calls were made at a seminar organised by UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital Osogbo with the theme: \u201cIntegration of Traditional Discoveries into Modern Medical Practices\u201d.<\/p>\n

This, according to the Chief Medical Director who was represented by the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC) of the hospital, Dr. Babatunde Afolabi, is done around the world saying modern medicine and drugs have their origin from vegetables and roots.<\/p>\n

He said other countries of the world like China and India have ventured into such researches and adopted integration of both orthodox, traditional and even spirituality, to resolve human medical challenges.<\/p>\n

A Senior Consultant at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital, Dr. Oluseyi Atanda who is also the President of Traditional Religion Worshippers Association of Osun State (TRWASO), defined Traditional Medicine as a set of knowledge, skills and practices based on theories, beliefs and experiences of different cultures.<\/p>\n

The participants concluded that such long practices are still considered relevant today by many people, therefore they cannot be wished away.<\/p>\n

In the same vein, a professor from Pediatrics Department, Wesley Guild, Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex, Ile-Ife, Professor Oyekunle Oyelami said the human body is designed to be healthy and nature ensures that the design is maintained as such stressed that most of the diseases can be traced to too much acidity in our system and inadequate fluid intake.<\/p>\n

Professor Oyelami delved much into the relevance and potency of vegetables and fruits disclosing that vegetables such as Senecio biafrae popularly known as \u2018efo worowo\u2019, bitter leaves, aloe vera, jatropha tanjorensis (iyana Ipaja), moringa etc are very good for the body system.<\/p>\n

In another paper titled \u201cSpirituality in Medicine\u201d, a Consultant Family Physician, Dr (Mrs) Valeria Adefila averred that spirituality plays a vital role when attending to patients, stressing that \u201cSpirituality may be a coping tool to help the patient\u201d.<\/p>\n

According to Dr. Adefila, spirituality transcends culture, religion, race and ethnicity stating further that, a patient with a terminal disease can also die peacefully when Spirituality is offered along with orthodox medical management.<\/p>\n

She deposed that Spirituality should be incorporated into preventive health care such as prayer, meditation, soothing music, yoga, etc. She urged members of the public to make sure they always have time to rest to ward off stress.<\/p>\n
