We have many players across the world but not all of them can play for us at the same time. If the technical crew can invite the best legs on merit, the Eagles will be a team to beat in Africa.

“The sacking won’t affect the country negatively if they build on the structure of Rohr by injecting a few good home-based players into the team. The coaching crew are Nigerians who should use their past experience to psyche up the players.”

While advocating for a free hand for the technical crew to operate and synergy among stakeholders for the Eagles to soar again, he also acknowledged that the sacking of the Super Eagles coach at this stage of the World Cup qualification was not a new development.

“Sacking a coach at this stage is not new. Shuaibu Amodu was sacked after qualifying us for the World Cup,” he said.

Commenting on the appointment of Augustine Eguavoen as acting coach for the team, he added that though he had failed to perform creditably well in the past, he is optimistic that with the cooperation and understanding of ex-internationals like Joseph Yobo, Austin JJ Okocha, Kanu Nwankwo, Nigeria should win the World Cup ticket and do well at the next AFCON edition in Cameroon.

Another sports analyst, Olawole Olayinka Hakeem, noted that though Gernot Rohr came under severe criticism following the Super Eagles underwhelming performance in the 1-0 loss to the Central African Republic and the 1-1 draw with Cape Verde in Lagos, he wished that the NFF should have waited till after the AFCON in 2022 before sacking him.

He lamented that since it is just a few weeks to the biggest football tournament in Africa and with a new coach, a new mentally and a new atmosphere, the team may not get it right as it happened in 2002 and 2010.

“To be candid, Rohr has done the needful, by qualifying Nigeria for the Nations Cup and World Cup Playoffs and with that has surpassed all conditions given by the Nigeria football governing body,” he said.

On Eguavoen’s appointment as acting coach of the senior national team, he admitted that though he has taken the Super Eagles to the Nations Cup in the past, the best the country got was a bronze medal in 2006.

“Changing the coach won’t bring instant success for the Super Eagles. It takes a lot of years to plan systematically and earn results.

“Austin Eguavoen may not lead the team to the Nations Cup, a foreign coach should be appointed soon that will lead us to the Nations Cup and World Cup playoffs. We can’t continue like this and it is confusing because the NFF handed a long term contract to Rohr early this year and this became a huge problem for them as they are meant to pay him off,” he said.

The sacking of Gernot Rohr, the German coach of the Super Eagles by the NFF is coming after months of speculations, denial and counter denials.

For More News And Analysis About Nigeria Follow Africa-Press

Africa-Press – Nigeria.
