Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Nigerian Senate, on Wednesday, dumped the direct mode of primary elections for political parties.<\/p>\n

The Senate\u2019s stand followed an amendment by the conference committee, which recommended that \u201cthe direct primary mode of election be expunged.\u201d<\/p>\n

The direct primary has been replaced with three options, including direct, indirect and consensus in clause 85 of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, 2021.<\/p>\n

DAILY POST observed that the decision followed the reintroduction of the Electoral Act Amendment bill by the Senate leader, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi, on the floor of the Senate on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Abdullahi called for amendment of the bill to provide options for \u2018direct, indirect and consensus\u2019 in clause 84 of the bill\u2019, stating that President Muhammadu Buhari had pointed it out before it was returned to the National Assembly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Senate recalls that the President and Commander-in-Chief had signified the withholding of of his assent on the Electoral Act No. 6, 2010 repeal and enactment bill, 2021, which was passed by the National Assembly and forwarded to the President for assent on Thursday, November 18, 2021.<\/p>\n

\u201cDesirous of the need to address the observation by Mr. President and make necessary amendments in accordance with order 87(C) of the Senate standing rules, 2022 as amended.\u201d<\/p>\n

Senate President, Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan, further called for the Committee of the Whole to consider the affected clause.<\/p>\n

After reading out clause 84 (2), saying: \u201cthe procedure for the nomination of candidates by political parties for the various elective positions shall be by direct, indirect primaries and consensus\u201d , it was passed into law.<\/p>\n
