Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership (CACOL) has endorsed the House of Representatives\u2019 move to investigate \u201cmissing\u201d 178,459 police firearms.<\/p>\n

A statement by the Director of Administration, Tola Oresanwo on behalf of the Chairman, Debo Adeniran, said the truth must be established.<\/p>\n

The House has mandated its Ad hoc Committee on Arms to investigate findings by the Auditor-General of the Federation, Adolphus Aghughu. Abubakar Fulata (APC, Jigawa) is the Chairman.<\/p>\n

The 2019 audit report said thousands of AK-47 rifles, other assorted rifles and pistols allocated to police formations nationwide could not be accounted for<\/p>\n

The lawmakers\u2019 resolution followed a motion by the Deputy Minority Leader, Toby Okechukwu (PDP, Enugu) on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Lamenting the police poor record-keeping on arms and ammunition, he linked the situation to the insecurity in Nigeria.<\/p>\n

Reacting, Adeniran noted that the police had become a shadow of its former self as a result of maladministration.<\/p>\n

The CACOL chairman wondered how funds budgeted over the years for firearms, welfare, logistics and capacity building vanished into thin air.<\/p>\n

Corruption and mismanagement of scarce resources have made law enforcement a herculean task for the Force, he said.<\/p>\n

Adeniran called the missing firearms a tip of the iceberg, considering the \u201cmonumental misappropriation\u201d going on in police procurement.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a known fact that the Police Force has been permanently incapacitated, disabled and rendered helpless majorly by the non-availability of firearms.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe use of superior firearms by enemies of the State has deprived the Police of carrying out its primary duty of maintaining law and order and also made the use of the Armed Forces inevitable for internal security.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adeniran charged the House of Representatives to carry out the probe duties without fear or favour and ensure that those found culpable face the full wrath of the law.<\/p>\n
