Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said it has begun investigations into the N700 million allegedly missing at the Ogun State House of Assembly.<\/p>\n

According to documents released by the EFCC, the NNPC mega station owned by Obasanjo Holdings Limited and Ashkash Nigeria Limited denied the receipts sent to the agency as evidence of how funds were expended.<\/p>\n

Recall that the anti-graft agency had in 2021 written the Ogun Assembly, demanding that it be furnished with receipts and information on all budget appropriations and allocations of the House from May 30, 2015, to date.<\/p>\n

At that moment, the Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo, said it had ordered staff of the Assembly to forward all requested documents to the anti-graft agency, saying the house had nothing to hide.<\/p>\n

Towards the end of 2021, the impeached Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon. Dare Kadiri, gave an account of how his signature was allegedly forged to siphon N50million from the Ogun Assembly.<\/p>\n

As the EFCC made efforts to invite other members of the legislative chamber for questioning, the Speaker and other lawmakers, except Kadiri, dragged the commission before an Abeokuta Federal High Court.<\/p>\n

The lawmakers were asking for an order of interlocutory injunction, directing the EFCC to maintain the status quo as of 1st December 2021 and or stay all actions relating to the criminal investigation made by the commission against the assembly, pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit filed.<\/p>\n

But in a counter-affidavit to the suit, FHC\/AB\/CS\/8\/22, the EFCC, through one of its operatives, Yazid Ahmad Bawa, said it had information that the lawmakers conspired among themselves to forge documents, steal and divert for their personal use, over N700 million allocated for the running of the Ogun State House of Assembly.<\/p>\n

Upon receipt of that \u201cdamning intelligence\u201d, the EFCC said it wrote to the Clerk of the House, requesting for some documents relating to financial records of the House, which were duly obliged.<\/p>\n

\u201cUpon review of the documents sent to it by the Clerk of the House, the 1st respondent observed some irregularities that prima facie looked like forgeries.<\/p>\n

\u201cFollowing best-known standard, international practice and in a show of good faith, the 1st respondent, instead of covertly getting a warrant of arrest against the applicants or just arresting them on the strength of its findings, the 1st respondent in a more civil manner, opted to invite the applicants to come and clear these irregularities. The applicants have until date failed or refused to honour that civil invitation.<\/p>\n

\u201cInstead of honouring the 1st respondent\u2019s invitation, the applicants have approached this honourable court for injunctions and declaratory reliefs aimed at curtailing the statutory powers of the 1st respondent to investigate alleged criminal activities of the applicants,\u201d the affidavit read partly.<\/p>\n

Fillings stations deny receipts<\/b><\/p>\n

Responding to a letter asking it to confirm receipts it purportedly issued to the assembly, the NNPC, through Obasanjo Holdings, said, \u201cWe write to inform you that the receipts being investigated were not issued by our filling station.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease find attached copies of the receipt we issued in 2018,2019 and 2021 which differs from those in question. We hope this addresses your concern.\u201d<\/p>\n

Also, Ashkash filling station, reportedly owned by the immediate past Speaker, Suraj Adekunbi, replied to the EFCC, \u201cWe have painstakingly and extensively gone through our records, nothing of such exists in our transactions records. By this, we did not know anything about the receipts sent for investigation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThanks for your usual cooperation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ogun Speaker reacts<\/b><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Speaker has said he would not want to comment on a matter that is already before the court.<\/p>\n

In a telephone conversation with DAILY POST correspondent on Thursday, Oluomo said he would not engage in media trial, saying the court should be allowed to do its job.<\/p>\n

However, he explained that most of the receipts in question were issued before he became the Speaker in 2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease note that the case is already in court, please allow the court to adjudicate in the matter based on the fact before it, not on submission by either party.<\/p>\n

\u201cBesides, most of the receipts and documents referred to preceded my becoming the Speaker and I don\u2019t believe in media trial,\u201d Oluomo submitted.<\/p>\n
