Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Niger State chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, has extended by another week its warning strike over the non-payment of salaries, retirees\u2019 gratuities and non-remittance of deductions made on workers\u2019 salaries in the state.<\/p>\n

The union hinged its decision on the inconclusiveness of negotiation between it and the ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and the 25 local government chairmen.<\/p>\n

In a letter addressed to the Head of the Civil Service of Niger State, Hajia Salamatu Abubakar, the union directed workers to continue with the strike action effective from midnight of Tuesday next week.<\/p>\n

According to the letter, \u201cfollowing the inconclusiveness of negotiation between the representatives of Niger State government and organized labour on state workers demands and the lack of commitment by the Ministry for Local Government and 25 local Government Chairmen in resolving the issues in contention within the warning strike window especially as it affects local government salary payment, the organized labour has resolved to extend the warning strike action by another seven days effective midnight of Tuesday, 15\/03\/2022\u2033<\/p>\n

The letter expressed hope that the representatives of the government will expedite action in resolving the demands of workers before the expiration of the warning strike window as a failure of which, the strike will remain indefinite in line with the earlier notice<\/p>\n

The state NLC stated,\u201d It is the hope of the organized labour that the representatives of the Niger State government will expedite action in ensuring that the ongoing negotiation is concluded and the ministry for local governments and 25 LG council chairmen will demonstrate the needed commitment to resolving the strike demands especially salary payment of local government workers before the expiration of the warning strike window, failure of which the strike will remain indefinite in line with the earlier notice\u201d.<\/p>\n

Recall that the organized labour in the state had earlier directed its affiliates to commence seven days industrial action effective 12 midnight on Sunday the 6th of March, 2022, while those operating at the Local Government Area level were asked to proceed effective 12 midnight of Thursday the 3rd of March, 2022.<\/p>\n
