Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The President, Nigerian Institute of Town Planning (NITP), Oluwatoyin Ayinde, has declared that failure to punish those who committed unethical practices in the country as well as gross violations had worsened the avoidable building collapse happening in the country.<\/p>\n

Ayinde said these in Bauchi on Saturday during his two-day advocacy visit to relevant ministries, higher institutions in the state.<\/p>\n

According to him, \u201cBuilding collapse is as a result of loss of our morals, ethics and values. Most times, you see people compromising, neglecting to do their work.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf construction is going on and the engineer is not supervising that is on us as a people. But there is a system that is supposed to check it but if these people fail to do their work, something is wrong.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne thing is paramount: if we have any wrongdoing, let\u2019s punish the person who is wrong because that is the only way it can serve as a lesson to others in the future.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why we are failing, we fail to punish and then other people feel encouraged to commit unethical practices.\u201d<\/p>\n

He submitted that to stem the tide of building collapse, there was the need for stakeholders to formulate implementable punishment for anyone who handled collapsed structures with a view to serving as a deterrent to others as well as saving lives and property from being destroyed.<\/p>\n

The NITP president declared that he had discovered that many state governments lacked the political will to implement the existing town planning laws.<\/p>\n

He informed that out of the 23 states of the federation he had visited so far, only seven had domesticated two planning laws, adding that three of them were implementing the laws in breach.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf the seven, three of them are implementing it breach, meaning they have planning organisations but they are being headed by politicians who are members of the construction industry. For me, that\u2019s being done in breach because the person cannot understand what the planning programme is.<\/p>\n

\u201cLagos, Ogun and one other state have been able to domesticate it. We have a state that did it but because of GIS they abrogated it,\u201d Ayinde said.<\/p>\n

DAILY POST reported that the NITP boss and his team, visited the Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), also in the state capital, state Ministries of Housing and Environment, Land and Survey, while they also paid homage to the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu, in his palace.<\/p>\n
