Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Jigawa State House of Assembly has passed a bill to prevent open defecation across the state.<\/p>\n

The bill was passed on Tuesday during the House plenary presided by the Speaker, Hon Idris Garba Jahun.<\/p>\n

He said the bill is aimed at promoting sanitation and public hygiene across the state.<\/p>\n

According to him, when the bill was signed into law, any person caught urinating or defecating openly not in house, public toilet and other designated places, will face the wrath of the law.<\/p>\n

He explained that under the law, the person can be sentenced to one month imprisonment, committed to community service or minimum of five thousand naira fine.<\/p>\n

Earlier, while presenting the bill for third reading, the chairman House Committee on Water Resources, Hon Haruna Aliyu Dangyatin a member representing Miga constituency, said the bill was brought for third reading after consultation and collecting inputs from civil societies, professional, civil servants, religious leader and other stakeholders.<\/p>\n

According to him, the bill has made a provision for the establishment of technical working committee at state and local government levels to support the implementation of the law.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlso, any person who constructs a house, establish factory or commercial centre must construct toilets in the premises and failure to do so will attract penalties,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
