Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The battle for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) 2023 presidential ticket may be between a maximum of five aspirants, DAILY POST has gathered.<\/p>\n

One is \u201ccertainly\u201d Vice President Atiku Abubakar who seems to be facing an internal resistance by chieftains desirous of a \u201cyounger candidate\u201d.<\/p>\n

A veteran hopeful, the Wazirin Adamawa has run for President five times \u2013 1993, 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019 \u2013 on different platforms.<\/p>\n

\u201cExcept sickness or death, Atiku and Bola Tinubu (APC) are going head-to-head in 2023. Both of them know this and are already mapping out strategies to counter themselves\u201d, an insider earlier stated.<\/p>\n

It was gathered that rival forces are trying to whittle Atiku\u2019s influence within the leading opposition party.<\/p>\n

At the October 2018 PDP primary in Port Harcourt, some stalwarts such as Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike worked for Sokoto Governor, Aminu Tambuwal.<\/p>\n

Wike was reportedly interested in emerging as Tambuwal\u2019s running mate in the presidential election. But Atiku floored his challengers to become the flagbearer.<\/p>\n

PDP Convention Committee Chairman and Delta Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa declared the results at the Adokiye Amesiamaka Stadium.<\/p>\n

Atiku polled 1,532 votes while Tambuwal had 693. Other contestants and scores: former Senate President Bukola Saraki \u2013 317; ex-Kano Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso 158; ex-Gombe Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo \u2013 111; ex-Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido \u2013 96.<\/p>\n

The rest: ex-Kaduna Governor Ahmed Makarfi \u2013 74; ex-Special Duties Minister Tanimu Turaki \u2013 65; former Sokoto Governor Attahiru Bafarawa \u2013 48; ex-Senate President David Mark- 35; ex-Plateau Governor Jonah Jang \u2013 19; former Kaduna Senator Datti Ahmed \u2013 5.<\/p>\n

DAILY POST gathered that considering Atiku\u2019s strength, leaders who are not on his side are seeking ways to agree on a \u201cconsensus selection\u201d.<\/p>\n

On Thursday in Abuja, Saraki, Tambuwal and Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed met to discuss how the party can wrestle power from the All Progressives Congress (APC).<\/p>\n

The meeting has stirred speculations that their ultimate goal is to present the \u201cstrongest aspirant\u201d to compete against Atiku. Sources insist the one-time Customs Director is the man to beat.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany contenders for the ticket means the votes will be split. If every person that obtains form gets on the ballot, I think we will have a repeat of what played out in 2018\u201d, one said.<\/p>\n

The camps of Saraki and Tambuwal did not react to enquiries seeking their position on the speculation. The next meeting of the trio has been scheduled for Sokoto.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Wike and other PDP ranking members from the South are demanding that the presidential ticket be zoned to the region.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, PDP National Chairman Iyorchia Ayu announced that the party will respect zoning because it had been a part of its tradition over the years.<\/p>\n

The 37-member zoning committee he inaugurated will submit their report on the sharing of offices next Wednesday.<\/p>\n

However, during his visit to Minna, Niger State, Tambuwal categorically told reporters that the PDP would not zone the presidency.<\/p>\n

The former lawmaker spoke after separate meetings with former Heads of State, retired Generals Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar.<\/p>\n

Tambuwal noted that zoning to a particular region of the country has never been the main factor in any political party since 1979.<\/p>\n

The governor said the emergence of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo in 1999 was \u201ca deliberate action by the political class\u201d to calm nerves after the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election.<\/p>\n

\u201cZoning of power to the South-West was meant to assuage a particular situation at that time, not meant to completely erode the constitutional right of Nigerian citizens.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn 2007, Chief Rochas Okorocha from the South-East contested the presidency with ex-President Umaru Yar\u2019Adua. When you look at the past, you will agree that zoning has not been the main issue in our political journey.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is paramount to PDP is how to win the 2023 elections, not waste its energy on zoning controversy. Nigeria, at this point, is in dire need of a President with competence and capacity, not a regional president\u201d, he asserted.<\/p>\n

Currently, five PDP top shots have picked nomination forms. They are Atiku (ex-VP); Anyim Pius Anyim (ex-Senate President); Saraki (former Kwara Governor); Tambuwal (ex-House of Representatives Speaker); Mohammed (former FCT Minister).<\/p>\n

Peter Obi, former Anambra Governor and Vice Presidential Candidate, is expected to get his form in the coming days.<\/p>\n
