{"id":64722,"date":"2022-05-13T16:23:16","date_gmt":"2022-05-13T15:23:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/emefiele-we-may-move-sensitive-election-materials-from-cbn-inec"},"modified":"2022-05-13T17:32:46","modified_gmt":"2022-05-13T16:32:46","slug":"emefiele-we-may-move-sensitive-election-materials-from-cbn-inec","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/emefiele-we-may-move-sensitive-election-materials-from-cbn-inec","title":{"rendered":"Emefiele: We may move sensitive election materials from CBN \u2013 INEC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday said it may consider alternatives for storing sensitive election materials outside the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).<\/p>\n<p>INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu said this while responding to a question on the political ambition and partisanship of the Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that Emefiele had filed a suit seeking enforcement of his right to contest the 2023 Presidential election without resigning from his current position,<\/p>\n<p>Emefiele is among the heads of agency and extra-ministerial departments yet to resign after President Muhammadu Buhari\u2019s order which directed members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) and other political appointees with political ambition to resign.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the development, Yakubu said the commission might be forced to find another arrangement for the handling of sensitive materials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dI understand the context in which the question is asked. But you should also understand the context in which events are unfolding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we speak, our director, litigation and prosecution is in court. There is a case in court. We have been invited to state our own side of the story. We usually refrain from talking about such issues because there is essentially subjudice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we have already started talking about what alternatives are available to us in case we need to change the arrangement for the handling of sensitive materials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are aware of the situation. We will watch the situation. We still have nine months before the next general elections.
