{"id":649,"date":"2017-12-18T14:17:21","date_gmt":"2017-12-18T14:17:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/africa-press.com\/nigeria\/?p=649"},"modified":"2017-12-18T14:17:21","modified_gmt":"2017-12-18T14:17:21","slug":"ekiti-govt-debunks-claim-fayose-borrowed-n56bn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/ekiti-govt-debunks-claim-fayose-borrowed-n56bn","title":{"rendered":"Ekiti govt debunks claim that Fayose borrowed N56bn."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Ekiti govt has debunk claims that Fayose borrowed N56bn, says; \u201cGovt only<br \/>\ntook N10bn ECA grant, N1bn loan for SUBEB counterpart fund\u201d<br \/>\nDescribing it as total falsehood, report that<br \/>\nthe State borrowed a total sum of N56 billion since Governor Ayodele<br \/>\nFayose assumed office and that a fresh N25 billion loan was applied<br \/>\nfor; saying that; \u201cthe only fresh loan taken by the government of<br \/>\nFayose was the N10 billion grant from the Excess Crude Account, which<br \/>\nwas released to all States for capital projects, N2.8 billion<br \/>\nrequested from Wema Bank to pay State Universal Basic Education Board<br \/>\n(SUBEB) counterpart fund out of which N1 billion has been accessed and<br \/>\nN600 million for MDGs counterpart fund, which has been repaid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The government said \u201cthe report, which was attributed to the Debt<br \/>\nManagement Office (DMO) was orchestrated from the media office of the<br \/>\nMinister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr Kayode Fayemi, who is<br \/>\nobviously struggling albeit unsuccessfully to redeem his battered<br \/>\nimage by trying to change the narrative from the debt he plunged Ekiti<br \/>\nState to and the wanton looting of the treasury when he was governor.<br \/>\nWe are aware of how hard Fayemi\u2019s media handlers tried yesterday, to<br \/>\nget the false report published in major newspapers, claiming that they<br \/>\nhad a classified document from the DMO.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Special Assistant to the State Governor on Public Communications and<br \/>\nNew Media, Lere Olayinka, who reacted to the report in a release<br \/>\nissued\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">on Monday<\/span><\/span>, said; \u201cThere is no recent bulletin from the DMO<br \/>\nwebsite concerning debt owed by any state as claimed in the false<br \/>\nreport. Nigerians, especially Ekiti people can visit the DMO website:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmo.gov.ng\/debt-profile\/domestic-debts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.dmo.gov.ng\/debt-profile\/domestic-debts<\/a>\u00a0for further<br \/>\nclarification.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said; \u201cAs at the time Governor Fayose assumed office, some of the<br \/>\nloans on the debt profile of Ekiti State were; Bond from capital<br \/>\nmarket (N26.7 billion), loan for developmental projects obtained from<br \/>\nEcobank using Fountain Holdings (N5 billion), loan for<br \/>\nrecapitalization obtained from Wema Bank (N1 billion), commercial<br \/>\nagric credit scheme from First Bank (N420.8 million), loan for legacy<br \/>\nfacility obtained from Ecobank (N408.2m), loan for developmental<br \/>\nprojects obtained from Skye Bank (N7.5bn), vehicle lease obtained from<br \/>\nEcobank (N146.6bn), laptop procurement (N375m) among others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is on record that Ekiti State Government was indebted to the tune<br \/>\nof N86, 013,689,097 as at October 16, 2014 that Governor Fayose took<br \/>\nover. The debts are broken down as follows: Bank Loans; N15,<br \/>\n831,613,425.62, Bond; N26, 749,796,784.75, Outstanding Warrants; N15,<br \/>\n522,552,900.76, Outstanding to Road Contractors; N21, 286,126,749,<br \/>\nOutstanding Remittances to FG; N709, 883,656.75, Outstanding<br \/>\nRemittances (State Govt); N592, 995,374.89 and EKSG Public Servants<br \/>\nOutstanding Emoluments; N5, 137,888,224.37.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are however not unmindful of the battered image of the APC in<br \/>\nEkiti State and the attempt to change the narrative to \u2018Fayemi\u2019s<br \/>\ngovernment truly plunged Ekiti into debt, but Fayose\u2019s government has<br \/>\nborrowed more.\u2019 This is more like someone admitting to being a thief<br \/>\nbut calling others thieves too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo matter how hard Fayemi and his spin-doctors try, they cannot erase<br \/>\nthe fact that apart from regular monthly allocation and Subsidy<br \/>\nReinvestment Programme (SURE-P) fund among others, Fayemi\u2019s received<br \/>\nN46.4 billion from the Excess Crude Account, yet he took N25 billion<br \/>\nbond and N31 billion commercial bank loan.
