Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) has denied reports that babies died due to a power outage.<\/p>\n

Acting Public Relations Officer, Elabha Meni issued a rebuttal at the weekend.<\/p>\n

Admitting that there was a power failure, Meni said it was not true that 14 infants died at the health facility.<\/p>\n

Meni accused \u201ccertain persons\u201d of trying to tarnish the image of UPTH by spreading false messages and information.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe story of the 14 to 19 babies dying in the hospital is not correct\u201d, the spokesman stressed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe did not record any infant mortality in our SCBU (inborn and outborn) as a result of our electrical power outage due to the faulty transformer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meni explained that even with the bad transformer, \u201cthe standby generator serviced the hospital for the period, with all emergency areas fully powered\u201d.<\/p>\n

UPTH condemned \u201cscandalous social media propaganda\u201d and maintained \u201csurgeries were never cancelled, neither were our services disrupted\u201d.<\/p>\n

The information of the babies\u2019 demise has sparked outrage with Nigerians on and off social media calling for an immediate probe.<\/p>\n

The report said patients, including those undergoing surgical operations, were affected by the irregular power supply at UPTH.<\/p>\n

It claimed that among the newborns reported dead were the twin babies of a woman who was barren for seven years.<\/p>\n

The woman gave birth in June but her babies were placed in an incubator because they were delivered prematurely.<\/p>\n

Patients were allegedly referred to private hospitals because of the electricity situation even as relatives \u201cused phone lights\u201d to aid the treatment of persons rushed to the Accident and Emergency Ward.<\/p>\n

A popular Twitter user @UgwunnaEjikem said the UPTH story \u201ccan only surprise non-medical people\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe initiated already know how terrible Nigeria\u2019s healthcare system is.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been screaming since more than half of all the deaths in Nigerian tertiary hospitals would\u2019ve been prevented if the system was working\u201d, the tweet reads.<\/p>\n

A medical doctor @Princeujay wrote: \u201c14 babies die due to power outage in UPTH, 7000 maternal deaths in 6 months in Ebonyi!<\/p>\n

\u201cNigeria comes 4th in the index of Highest Maternal Mortality Rate in Africa due to poor medical health care! We cannot continue like this!\u201d<\/p>\n
