Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Staff of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) on Tuesday, embarked on an indefinite strike over the non-implementation of a new salary structure in the organisation.<\/p>\n

The workers vowed not to return to work until their demands are met.<\/p>\n

Speaking to newsmen on behalf of the agency in Abuja, the Assistant Director, Udeme Umanah gave reasons why the agency decided to embark on strike.<\/p>\n

He said \u201dthe AEPB is an autonomous agency established under AEPB Acts of 1997. The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) wants AEPB to be a department under the administration. The Act provides that the Board employs staff and others by secondment.<\/p>\n

\u201cDespite the work functions that are very sensitive and hazardous, the National Salary and Income Wages Commission recommends CONHESS salary structures to AEPB.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe presidential committee approved the same salary structures as the National Salary and Income Wages Commission which was forwarded to FCTA in 2021.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey commenced the CONHESS salary structures from January 2020. The Health, Agric, Social Development Secretariat, and FCT-IRS earn different salary structures.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe gave the administration 21 days\u2019 notice to implement the salary structures for AEPB, we gave them seven days and finally, we gave them three days\u2019 notice. It was after the expiration of the three days notice that the Minister called us and agreed to implement the salary structure and pleaded that we should not go on strike and that we should give them two weeks to sort it out.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy last week Friday, our two weeks notice expired hence we are embarking on an indefinite strike and we are not ready to go back until they implement our salary structure. \u201d<\/p>\n

It would be recalled that AEPB workers on Tuesday barricaded the agency\u2019s headquarters in protest of the non-implementation of a new salary structure.<\/p>\n

Some of the staff who spoke to our correspondents said the new salary structure had been approved in 2019 but was yet to be implemented by the management.<\/p>\n

They added that the protest was to register their displeasure over the situation and that they will also embark on a three-day warning strike to draw the attention of the FCT Minister.<\/p>\n

They added that if the new salary structure was not implemented after the strike, the workers will take more action to press home their demands.<\/p>\n
